2. PLANT TISSUES
• Tissue is a group of cells having a common
origin and usually performing a common
function A plant is made up of different
kinds of tissues Tissues are classified into
two main groups
• 1.Meristematic tissues
• 2.permanent tissues
3. MERISTEMATIC TISSUES
• Growth in plants is largely restricted to
specialised regions of active cell division called
meristems
• 1.Apical meristems
• 2.Intercalery meristem
5. PARENCHYMA
• Tissue formed of same kind of cells with thin cell
walls.
• It seen in soft parts of plants.
• Chloroplasts can be seen in some parenchyma cells.
• In certain parenchyma cells, air filled spacescan be
seen between the cells.
• It performs functions such as photosynthesis, food
storage etc...
6. COLLENCHYMA
• Tissues formed of similar cells with thickened cell
walls only at the corners.
• The corners of the cell walls become thickened due
to the deposition of substances like suberin, pectin,
cellulose etc.
• These provide support to the plant parts.
7. SCLERENCHYMA
• This tissue formed of thick walled cells.
• Thickness is due to the deposition of a substance
called lignin.
• Hard plant parts are made up of sclerenchyma
cells.
• It provides support and strength to the plant parts.
8. XYLEM
• Tissues which is formed of elongated cells.
• These cells unite together and are seen as pipes.
• Water and minerals absorbed by the roots
reaches the leaves through these pipes.
• The deposition of lignin, the cells of the tissue get
hardened.
•
9. PHLOEM
• Tissue formed of elongated cells.
• They too are formed as pipes like the xylem
tissues.
• The food prepared in the leaves reaches the
different parts of the plant including the root
through these pipes.
