The document describes the layout and design choices for the cover page, contents page, and a double page spread (DPS) article in a magazine. Key elements included on each page follow magazine design conventions and include a masthead, title, graphics, quotes, bylines, columns for copy, and images. The choices in typefaces, colors, and element placement are meant to look professional, be visually appealing, promote articles, and provide easy navigation for readers. Conventions are followed to align with reader expectations and typical magazine formatting.
2. Masthead
The masthead on the cover page is
located at the top left of the
page, similar to most other
magazines. I chose to follow
convention to look professional and
recognizable to regular viewers. The
reason that I used the masthead
was to title the magazine and make
the audience know its title.
Left Third
I chose to add a left third as it is a
good way to add information about
the issue inside the magazine, on
the cover page. It’s on the left so
when on the shelves in stores, it is
clear to the viewer. It is convention
to have a left third on magazines. I
placed this here as I felt it looks
good on the page and is a good way
to show the information.
Lure
I added a lure onto the cover page
to promote the article in this issue.
It gives more depth and offers
interest. Also, it is a magazine
convention.
Byline/ Cover line
I chose to have my main article as
the byline as it is clear and stands
out from the rest of the page.
Bylines are conventional on cover
pages. This has been used to display
the main story and to grab the
readers attention.
Banner
The banner gives extra information
and is a graphic. I chose to have this
as it is conventional. This banner is
used at the bottom of the page to
give the viewer a rough idea of the
contents in the magazine.
Barcode
The barcode is a convention as it
allows the magazine to be sold. I
chose to have it at the top as the
rest of the layout fits best around it
being at the top. The reason why
this is placed here is that there is a
free white space and needs to be
clear on the page.
House Style
The house style is red, white and
black. These colours aren’t
dominant to a particular gender and
also look dominant and
professional. I am following
convention as other magazines such
as Q follow similar house colours.
House styles are very important as
they brand a magazine and make it
look professional.
Main Image
The dominant image is large and
covers the entire page. I decided to
lay it out like this as I felt it was
most striking and visually appealing.
A reason I used the main image was
to make it stand out and promote
the main article.
Graphics
I added graphics to make the
magazine look more appealing. It
also allows me to promote articles
and advertisements. I chose to have
it on the right side as it looks nice
and places well with other
elements. I used the graphics to add
visual features to the page and
make it look nicer.
Advertorial
The advertorial promotes the free
MP3 inside the magazine, it is clear
and looks professional and
encourages people to buy the
magazine. The advertorial is used
to promote a feature.
3. Masthead/ Typeface
I chose to include the masthead in
the contents page on the same
position as I felt it framed the page
nicely and looks professional having
the logo on every page. I used the
masthead to brand the page and
add to the house style.
Index
The index is a convention and
displays pages inside the article. I
chose to make it a paper rip effect
as a house style and make it like the
left third on the cover page. I
placed the index in a column to
make it look formal and
professional but also on the left to
look like a left third convention.
Page numbers
I included page numbers in the
house style. It looks professional
and allows users to navigate the
magazine. The reason I used these
was to provide easy navigation for
the user.
Advertorial
I included an advertorial to promote
a competition available in the
magazine. Advertorials are a
convention on the contents page.
This is used to attract customers to
the magazine.
Editorial
The editorial is a convention on the
cover page. I included mine
underneath the index as I felt that it
looks best here and fits nicely. I
included copy of the text as well as
a framed picture of the editor. This
is similar to a lot of other magazines
as is a convection. This is used to
personally thank the customers and
is a personal touch to the magazine.
Title
The title of the contents page is
located at the top and is clearly
shown. This is similar to many other
magazines and is a convention to
have the title at the top of the page
as it is noticeable. The title is used
to make customers aware of what
page it is.
Main Image
The main image is the background
image to the contents page. I chose
to make this the background as it is
visually appealing and also
promotes an article. It is used to
look appealing and promote an
article.
Framing
I chose to frame the image that the
elements didn’t overlap the main
part of the image. I used cropping
to do this. I have framed it like this
to display the focus o the image on
the blank space.
Quote
I chose to include a quote here to
introduce and promote the article
featured on the contents page. This
fits the layout and style of the page
and looks visually appealing. I used
the quote to make it seem more
realistic and personal with the
audience.
Website/Page Number
I chose to include the website
address and the page number to
give information to the customer
that they might need. It also looks
nicely placed on the layout of the
page. I used this as a way of
navigation and a way to contract
the magazine or visit it for more
information and to appeal modern.
4. Masthead/Typeface
I chose to have the masthead located in the
same position so there was a house style in
the layout of all my pages. I think it also looks
very professional. This is used to brand the
page to make it look professional.
Title
I chose to place the title of the pages next to
the masthead so it is clear and not too
distracting from the other elements on the
page. The title is used to title the page so
customers know what the page is about.
Article Title
The article title is very large and in a typography
style. It follows the house style colours and suits
the page and it’s layout. It is conventional to have
the title at the top of the page. This uses bright
colours to appeal to the audience and stand out on
the black./white page.
Quote
I added a quote on the left page as it filled up some space and
looks very nice. Often in double page spreads they contain
quotes from the artists so I followed this convention. The
reason why I added this was because it filled a blank space and
felt more personal between the artist and the customers.
Byline
The byline is the editor and photographer of the
article. I included this as many of the other magazines
contain this and it looks very professional. The reason
why I added this was for more detail and because it is
used by real life magazines.
Graphics
The graphics are the same as in the cover
page and promote the same thing. I
chose to locate it after the copy as the
reader may wish to download it after
they have read the article. I used
graphics to make the page more
appealing and unique.
Caption
The caption is located within the picture to
give extra details about the picture. It also
provides credits to the photographer which
is deserved. The reason why is because they
require them to be credited.
Strapline
I chose to locate the strapline between
the title and copy of the article to give
the article more depth and explanation
as an introductory paragraph. This is
used for extra brief information.
Feature
The feature in the DPS is the in depth
article text. I chose to include this to
narrate the article and to also give
information. I arranged it in columns as it
is conventional. I t is in columns to make
it easier for people to read.
Copy
The copy Is the text in the article. I made
the copy into two columns as it is
conventional for the text to be arranged
as such.
Gutter
The gutter is in between the two
columns of copy in the DPS pages. This
makes the magazine layout look
professional like other magazines and is
conventional. This is used to separate
elements and make it laid out clearer.
Mode of Address
The mode of address in the article is
informal as the target audience is
young adults and they won’t want to
read a more complex piece of writing.
