Originally I had predicted that the
research element of the project would
take ten lessons or ten hours, however
as I progressed through this timescale
changed. This is because I hadn’t taken
into account the amount of time which I
would put into the research outside of
school. Due to elements of my research
being required to be completed outside
of school hours such as actually visiting
the clients accommodation and the
disassembly of the product. The
research wasn’t completed in the
manner which I had shown in the Gantt
chart also, due to completing elements
at home I started to do initial sketches
and designs somewhat midway from
through October. Research was
continued throughout the designing and
making, with further research being
completed when necessary.
Again this element of the designing work took much
quicker than I had originally anticipated. The original
timeframe was a result of little sketchup experience but
due to picking it up quickly and being able to design
accurately but also quickly and completing in my own
time this element took only two in college lessons as
well as two or three hours at home. This gave me more
time to advance onto the development stages
prematurely and gave me more time to spare for other
parts of the project as I progressed.
Although it states that both the front
and contents took two lessons to complete
respectively they took nowhere near as long
This was due to there being no option of
putting a smaller time period than two
lessons and the fact that that each sheet
contained little information. However, the
contents page took much longer when it
was completed at the end of the project due
to the amount of slides to include and type
out compared to the original amount which I
had in mind.
Testing was originally planned to start
at the beginning of December but due
to the quick paced which I worked out
throughout the project testing was
started late November. However
testing wasn’t completed until the end
of manufacturing, where I tested out
revised techniques such as using the
satin lacquer which were completed
towards the end of the project. Like
research testing although grouped
together, was completed throughout the
project when I felt it was necessary and
beneficial to the manufacturing and
what I was doing.
Manufacturing of the product began roughly twelve
lessons before I had originally planned, which gave
me much more time to work on elements of the
project which took more time. One of the main
elements which occupied this saved time was filing
the frame, this although a small task ensured the
product looked professional and took roughly four
lessons to complete for all compartments. The
manufacturing encountered setbacks such as mis-
measurements of components or compromising of
the aesthetics i.e. getting basecoat on Plastazote
accidently. However, manufacturing was finished in
time for the early April deadline which I had
personally set with one or two lessons to spare.

research is to gain detailed

current trends in storage design,
for elements which I could
perhaps use in my own design.

I plan to go about doing this through
gathering images from the web. Most
importantly I will gather information
from primary sources, to go about this I
will collect images of my chosen design.
For example, I could collect brochures
and magazines from places such as IKEA
of design outlets.
Existing Designs
This research is to gather
background information of
current designs of the
current, and past
members. This will help
me see the similarities and
the differences between
current designs, which
could enable me to find a
niche in the market.
The outcome of this element of
research is to gain a good
knowledge of the market, this
will help me for when it comes
to time to design the storage
device. It will help me to make
sure that my design contains
already successful elements,
and help to incorporate different
styles.
I will gather this
information in the same
way in which I intend to
gather the photos.
I plan to go about doing this through
visiting current design outlets such as
homebase or ikea. This will enable me to
get a feel about storage, and enablke me
to take photographs to analkyse these
designs in the future. I can also gather
existing design infomation through
analysing photographs from around the
house of similar storage units.
Questionnaire
This research is important
as it firsthand allows me to
gather information about
what typical consumers
prefer or find successful in
a design. This can be
carried out through using
a survey or questionnaire
either handed out, or
completed online.
The intended outcome of this
particular piece of research is to
gain knowledge of the target
audience. Through feedback it
will also allow me to have an
idea of the different features I
could include.
I will gather this
information through the
completion of the
survey. This can either
be sent personally
through an email to
friends or relatives. It
could also be handed
out to a wider audience
through handing the
survey out to people in
college.
This piece of research allowed me to
be able to accurately understand what
people of the same age and occupation
(student) as the client would want the
various features of the storage unit to
be, this would allow me to create
success criteria for my project and
what I could include dependant of the
views of the people who are
questioned. I would also be able to
clearly see what both male and females
prefer the appearance of this product
to look, and what the differences are
from each gender. It also gave me an
idea of what materials I could make my
product out of in the price range, and
whereabouts in the accommodation it
would be situated, also giving me
further detailed research into the
different types of storage that I could
use e.g. encased or open and the
design style which people prefer.

  • 4. Originally I had predicted that the research element of the project would take ten lessons or ten hours, however as I progressed through this timescale changed. This is because I hadn’t taken into account the amount of time which I would put into the research outside of school. Due to elements of my research being required to be completed outside of school hours such as actually visiting the clients accommodation and the disassembly of the product. The research wasn’t completed in the manner which I had shown in the Gantt chart also, due to completing elements at home I started to do initial sketches and designs somewhat midway from through October. Research was continued throughout the designing and making, with further research being completed when necessary. Again this element of the designing work took much quicker than I had originally anticipated. The original timeframe was a result of little sketchup experience but due to picking it up quickly and being able to design accurately but also quickly and completing in my own time this element took only two in college lessons as well as two or three hours at home. This gave me more time to advance onto the development stages prematurely and gave me more time to spare for other parts of the project as I progressed. Although it states that both the front and contents took two lessons to complete respectively they took nowhere near as long This was due to there being no option of putting a smaller time period than two lessons and the fact that that each sheet contained little information. However, the contents page took much longer when it was completed at the end of the project due to the amount of slides to include and type out compared to the original amount which I had in mind.
  • 5. Testing was originally planned to start at the beginning of December but due to the quick paced which I worked out throughout the project testing was started late November. However testing wasn’t completed until the end of manufacturing, where I tested out revised techniques such as using the satin lacquer which were completed towards the end of the project. Like research testing although grouped together, was completed throughout the project when I felt it was necessary and beneficial to the manufacturing and what I was doing. Manufacturing of the product began roughly twelve lessons before I had originally planned, which gave me much more time to work on elements of the project which took more time. One of the main elements which occupied this saved time was filing the frame, this although a small task ensured the product looked professional and took roughly four lessons to complete for all compartments. The manufacturing encountered setbacks such as mis- measurements of components or compromising of the aesthetics i.e. getting basecoat on Plastazote accidently. However, manufacturing was finished in time for the early April deadline which I had personally set with one or two lessons to spare.

  • 10. Photos This is research through the use of photographs. This can be achieved through the use of both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources can be obtained through photos taken by myself. With secondary sources being external sources such as books, magazines or the internet. The outcome of this piece of research is to gain detailed background information on the current trends in storage design, for elements which I could perhaps use in my own design. See First Box I plan to go about doing this through gathering images from the web. Most importantly I will gather information from primary sources, to go about this I will collect images of my chosen design. For example, I could collect brochures and magazines from places such as IKEA of design outlets. Existing Designs This research is to gather background information of current designs of the current, and past members. This will help me see the similarities and the differences between current designs, which could enable me to find a niche in the market. The outcome of this element of research is to gain a good knowledge of the market, this will help me for when it comes to time to design the storage device. It will help me to make sure that my design contains already successful elements, and help to incorporate different styles. I will gather this information in the same way in which I intend to gather the photos. I plan to go about doing this through visiting current design outlets such as homebase or ikea. This will enable me to get a feel about storage, and enablke me to take photographs to analkyse these designs in the future. I can also gather existing design infomation through analysing photographs from around the house of similar storage units. Questionnaire This research is important as it firsthand allows me to gather information about what typical consumers prefer or find successful in a design. This can be carried out through using a survey or questionnaire either handed out, or completed online. The intended outcome of this particular piece of research is to gain knowledge of the target audience. Through feedback it will also allow me to have an idea of the different features I could include. I will gather this information through the completion of the survey. This can either be sent personally through an email to friends or relatives. It could also be handed out to a wider audience through handing the survey out to people in college.

This piece of research allowed me to be able to accurately understand what people of the same age and occupation (student) as the client would want the various features of the storage unit to be, this would allow me to create success criteria for my project and what I could include dependant of the views of the people who are questioned. I would also be able to clearly see what both male and females prefer the appearance of this product to look, and what the differences are from each gender. It also gave me an idea of what materials I could make my product out of in the price range, and whereabouts in the accommodation it would be situated, also giving me further detailed research into the different types of storage that I could use e.g. encased or open and the design style which people prefer.

ONCE THE FRONT AND LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES ARE COMPLETED, SLIDE THE 3MM BOTTOM PIECE INTO THE PREVOUSLY ROUTED OUT 3MM GROOVE TO COMPLETE THE DRAWER BOX AND GROOVE JOINT, ALIGN THE COMBS OF THE BACK PIECE AND PVA INTO PLACE. ALLOW TO DRY END ADDITIONAL NOTES: •ENSURE THAT THE COMBS OF THE COMBJOINT WHICH WILL MAKE UP THE DRAW BOX ARE 6MM IN LENGTH, THIS IS DUE TO THE WIDTH OF THE MDF USED BEING 6MM AND THEREFORE WILL ENSURE THAT THE JOINTS WILL SIT EASILY TOGETHER AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE. •ENSURE THAT ONCE THE BOTTOM PIECE IS CUT OUT AND THE 3MM GROOVES ARE ROUTED THAT IT FITS FLUSH UP TO WHERE THE BACK PIECE IS, IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE BUT IT IS ONLY OUT BY 1 OR 2MM SAND DOWN UNTIL IT FITS, IF IT IS OUT BY MORE, THEN REDESIGN AND CUT OUT THIS PIECE ONCE MORE. SAFETY N/A QUALITY CONTROL •IT IS IMPRTANT THE SIDES ARE THE CORRECT SUZE BECAUSE OTHERWISE IT WOULD CREATE A WONKY OR IMPERFECTED FIT. THIS CAN BE ENSURED THROUGH PASTING THE OPPOSING SIDES INSTEAD OF CREATING AGAIN, THIS WILL MAKE SURE THEY ARE EXACTLY THE SAME •THE DRAWER IS REQUIRED TO FIT IN THE CAVITY WELL, THERE MUST BE SPACE OF AT LEAST 15mm EITHERSIDE TO ALLOW THE INSTALLATION OF DRAWER RUNNER MECHANISM BUT MINIMAL SPACE AT TOP (NO MORE THAN 5mm) 10 5 15 5 1 3 120

WITH ASSISTANCE, HOLD DOWN FLEXIPLY ONTO THE EDGES AND TAC AND NAIL THROUGH THE FLEXIPLY AT 20MM INTERVALS APPLY FILLER ADD MORE NAILS IF NEEDED USING A HANDSAW, CUT OFF ANY EXCESS EDGES IS THERE ANY IRREGULARI TIES OR GAPS? SAND WITH VARYING GLASS PAPER TO A SMOOTH AND LEVEL FINISH END ADDITIONAL NOTES: •ENSURE WHEN TACKING THE FLEXI-PLY TO THE EDGES OF THE DESIGN, THAT PLENTY OF GLUE IS USED, DUE TO USING PVA GLUE IT WILL DRY CLEAR AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE IS REQUIRED FOR THE FLEXIPLY TO STAY IN PLACE. •WHEN NAILING IN THE FLEXIPLY, ENSURE THAT THEY ARE ROUGHLY 5-10MM INSIDE OF THE EDGE, THIS WILL PREVENT THE NAIL PETRUDING OUT OF THE EDGE IF IT IS PIN HAMMERED WRONG AND COMPROMISE THE AESTHETICS. •WHEN PIN HAMMERING THE NAILS INTO THE FLEXIPLY, ENSURE THAT MORE NAILS ARE USED ON THE EXTREME CURVITURE AT THE TOP OF THE DESIGN, THIS IS WHERE THE DESIGN IS MOST LIKELY BE UNDER MOST PRESUURE SO MORE ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP IT IN PLACE. •CREATE THE FILLER THROUGH ADDING EQUAL QUANTITIES OF BOTH SAWDUST AND PVA GLUE. SAFETY WHEN THE PINHAMMER IS BEING USED, TAKE CAR TO AVOID HITTING AND INJURY FINGERS, THE SAME IS TRUE FOR THE HANDSAW BUT THIS IS MOSTLY COMMON SENSE. QUALITY CONTROL ANY GAPS IN THE DESIGN WILL BE SHOW UP AT THE END AND POSSIBLY RUIN THE AESTHETICS, SO USING A FINGER RUN AROUND THE EDGES WHERE THE FLEXIPLY MEETS THE MDF.
