4. Originally I had predicted that the
research element of the project would
take ten lessons or ten hours, however
as I progressed through this timescale
changed. This is because I hadn’t taken
into account the amount of time which I
would put into the research outside of
school. Due to elements of my research
being required to be completed outside
of school hours such as actually visiting
the clients accommodation and the
disassembly of the product. The
research wasn’t completed in the
manner which I had shown in the Gantt
chart also, due to completing elements
at home I started to do initial sketches
and designs somewhat midway from
through October. Research was
continued throughout the designing and
making, with further research being
completed when necessary.
Again this element of the designing work took much
quicker than I had originally anticipated. The original
timeframe was a result of little sketchup experience but
due to picking it up quickly and being able to design
accurately but also quickly and completing in my own
time this element took only two in college lessons as
well as two or three hours at home. This gave me more
time to advance onto the development stages
prematurely and gave me more time to spare for other
parts of the project as I progressed.
Although it states that both the front
and contents took two lessons to complete
respectively they took nowhere near as long
This was due to there being no option of
putting a smaller time period than two
lessons and the fact that that each sheet
contained little information. However, the
contents page took much longer when it
was completed at the end of the project due
to the amount of slides to include and type
out compared to the original amount which I
had in mind.
5. Testing was originally planned to start
at the beginning of December but due
to the quick paced which I worked out
throughout the project testing was
started late November. However
testing wasn’t completed until the end
of manufacturing, where I tested out
revised techniques such as using the
satin lacquer which were completed
towards the end of the project. Like
research testing although grouped
together, was completed throughout the
project when I felt it was necessary and
beneficial to the manufacturing and
what I was doing.
Manufacturing of the product began roughly twelve
lessons before I had originally planned, which gave
me much more time to work on elements of the
project which took more time. One of the main
elements which occupied this saved time was filing
the frame, this although a small task ensured the
product looked professional and took roughly four
lessons to complete for all compartments. The
manufacturing encountered setbacks such as mis-
measurements of components or compromising of
the aesthetics i.e. getting basecoat on Plastazote
accidently. However, manufacturing was finished in
time for the early April deadline which I had
personally set with one or two lessons to spare.
10. Photos
This is research through
the use of photographs.
This can be achieved
through the use of both

being external sources
such as books, magazines
or the internet.
The outcome of this piece of
research is to gain detailed
background information on the
current trends in storage design,
for elements which I could
perhaps use in my own design.

gathering images from the web. Most
importantly I will gather information
from primary sources, to go about this I
will collect images of my chosen design.
For example, I could collect brochures
and magazines from places such as IKEA
of design outlets.

could enable me to find a

research is to gain a good
knowledge of the market, this

information in the same
way in which I intend to
gather the photos.
I plan to go about doing this through
visiting current design outlets such as
homebase or ikea. This will enable me to
get a feel about storage, and enablke me
to take photographs to analkyse these
designs in the future. I can also gather
existing design infomation through
analysing photographs from around the
house of similar storage units.
Questionnaire
This research is important
as it firsthand allows me to
gather information about
what typical consumers
prefer or find successful in
a design. This can be
carried out through using
a survey or questionnaire
either handed out, or
completed online.
The intended outcome of this
particular piece of research is to
gain knowledge of the target
audience. Through feedback it
will also allow me to have an
idea of the different features I
could include.
