PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION OF INDIA

2. INTRODUCTION TO PRIMARY EDUCATION
The primary stage is very crucial stage in the life of the child. So, The objectives of primary
education are different from those in the middle stage of education. At the primary level the
child’s curiosity, creativity and activity in general should not be restricted by a rigid and
unattractive methods of teaching and learning.
3. OBJECTIVES OF PRIMARY EDUCATION
1. Literacy: The child should learn the first language the mother-tongue to a level where he can communicate
his ideas easily.
2. Numeracy: The child should develop ability in four fundamental numerical operations and to be able to apply
these to solve problems in his daily life.
3. Nationalism: The child should develop a respect for national symbols like the flag and the anthem and should
know about learn to dislike to casteism, untouchability and communalism.
4. Human dignity: The child should develop healthy attitudes towards human labour and dignity.

Sanitary habits: The child should develop habits of cleanliness and healthful living and
an understanding of the proper sanitation and hygiene of the neighborhood.
Aesthetic Sense: The child should acquire a taste for the good and beautiful and should
take care of its surroundings.
5. INTRODUCTION TO CURRICULUM OF
PRIMARY EDUCATION
The child should receive instruction in the basic tools of learning such as
reading, writing and computation and should learn to adjust to his surrounding
through an elementary study of his physical and social environment.
For a sound foundation of mother-tongue, no language other than this should be
introduced during the first four years. The curriculum should be gradually
expanded and developed in keeping with the child’s growth and development.
6. CURRICULUM OF PRIMARY EDUCATION
The curriculum at this stage should include:
(i) One language, the mother-tongue or the regional language,
(ii) Arithmetic,
(iii) Study of the environment (covering Science and Social Studies in classes III and IV),
(iv) Creative activities,
(v) Work-experience and Social Service
(vi) Health education.
7. OBJECTIVES OF SECONDARY EDUCATION
1. To bring all round development among the learner.
2. To train the young mass of the country to be good citizens who will be competent to play
their part effectively in the social and economic development of the country.
3. To promote social, intellectual development and practical skills of students.
4. To develop artistic and cultural interests which are essential for self-expression and
development of all round personality of pupils.

5. To Train character of students to enable them to participate creatively as citizens in the emerging social order.
6. To improve practical and vocational efficiency of the students.
7. To develop a scientific attitude of mind to think objectively.
8. To inculcate the qualities necessary for living harmoniously and efficiently with one’s fellowmen.
9. To develop a sense of strengthening social and national integration.
10. To consolidate democracy to adopt as a way of life.
11. To accelerate the peace education among the young mind.
9. INTRODUCTION TO CURRICULUM OF SECONDARY
The curriculum should meet the needs of the adolescent individuals as well as the democratic
society in which the child is expected to participate as a citizen on reaching maturity.
The needs of adolescence are related not only to the acquisition of knowledge and the
promotion of intellectual ability, but the fuller development of physical, emotional aesthetic
and moral aspects of personality. Provision has, therefore, to be made in the curriculum for
the programme of physical education.
10. CURRICULUM OF SECONDARY EDUCATION
1. Three languages: Mother-tongue, Hindi and English in non-Hindi area and in Hindi area mother-tongues (Hindi), English
and one of the 15 modern Indian languages other than Hindi, it may here be noted the a classical language may be studied in
addition to the above 3 languages on an optional basis.

4. History, Geography and Civics,
5. Art,
6. Work-experience and Social Service,
7. Physical Education, and Education in moral and spiritual values.
