3. こと or の?
Onlyことis used
（1）When you add another expression
チーターは時速(じそく)120kｍで走(はし)ることができる。 Cheetah can run at 120km per an hour.
イギリスに行ったことがある。 I’ve been to England.
イギリスに行くことにする。 I decided to go to England. (‘I’ decided)
イギリスに行くことになる。 I was decided to go to England.
イギリスによく行くことがある。
I go to England often. (there are times I go to England often)
（2）When a main verb is です、だ、である
私の趣味(しゅみ)は映画(えいが)を見る｛○こと／×の｝です。
My hobby is to watch film.
重要(じゅよう)なのは間違(まちが)いを正す｛○こと／×の｝だ。
The important thing is to correct a mistake.
京都について調(しら)べる｛○こと／×の｝である。
It is to investigate about Kyoto.
4. こと or の?
(3) When a main verb is mainly related to an utterance.
例：祈(いの)る、希望(きぼう)する、伝（つた）える、願（ねが）う、すす
める、信（しん）じる、ふせぐ
サラに今夜(こんや)遅(おそ)くなる｛○こと／×の｝を伝えてください。
Please tell Sarah that I am going to be late tonight.
テストに合格(ごうかく)する｛○こと／×の｝を願(ねが)っています。
I hope that you will pass the test.
5. こと or の?
Only の used
(1)When a main verb is related to a sense/feeling such as見る、見える、 （声、音を）聞く、聞こ
える
人々(ひとびと)が踊(おど)っている｛×こと／○の｝が見える。 I can see people dancing.
赤(あか)ちゃんが泣(な)いている｛×こと／○の｝が聞こえる。 I can hear a baby crying.
(2)When a main verb has some kind of relation with a verb in a noun clause such as 感（か
ん）じる、待(ま)つ、手伝(てつだ)う、じゃまする、写(うつ)す、
荷物(にもつ)を運(はこ)ぶ｛×こと／○の｝を手伝ってください。
Please help me carrying a luggage.
私の子どもがステージで歌(うた)う｛×こと／○の｝を写してください。
Please take a photo/film of my kid singing on the stage.
私の妹(いもうと)は勉強する｛×こと／○の｝をじゃまする。
My little sister interferes with my studying.
6. こと or の?
(3)When a main verb is やめる、止(と)める (to stop).
たばこをすう｛×こと／○の｝をやめました。I stopped smoking.
私の母は夜(よる)10時以降(いこう)に外出(がいしゅつ)する｛×こと／○の｝を止める。
My mother stops going out after 10 at night.
(4)When the sentence has emphasis.
田中さんが来なかった｛×こと／○の｝はきのうだ。
It was yesterday that Mr Tanaka didn’t come.
田中さんが来なかった｛×こと／○の｝は、忙(いそが)しいからだ。
It was because Mr Tanaka was busy so that he didn’t come. (The reason Mr Tanaka didn’t come
was busy)
7. とき + particles
• ときに
→when you emphasise time(時) and case(場合)
この前のたいふうのときに、うちがこわれました。
• ときも
→when you have more than 1 thing
まずしいときも、ゆうふくなときもいっしょにいます。
• ときや
→when you have similar things or situation
疲れたときや寂しいとき、田舎を思い出す。
• ときの
→の+Noun when you add more information
これは、日本に行ったときの写真です。
• ときから
→from, since then
生まれたときから、ずっと大阪に住んでいます。
「とき」のあとに、いろい
ろなじょし(particle)をつけ
られる。
12. まとめ
• One use of てform is to link sentences in the order of event
• Another use of てform is to express a cause (原因) and the
sentence which follows express a result (結果)
• In this case, the result to express your feelings.
• ニュースを聞いてびっくりしました。
• 台風で交通が止まって困りました。
13. まとめ
• Potential verbs and verbs can express states.
• ニュースがショックで、ご飯が食べられませんでした。
• 土曜日は都合が悪くて、行けません。
• 話が複雑で、よくわかりませんでした。
• てform can express situations in the past.
• 途中で事故があって、遅れてしまいました。
14. まとめ
• てform now sounds like you can say a reason of the cause BUT there
are exceptions.
• When expressing volitional meanings(will - 意志, orders - 命令,
invitation - 招待or request - お願い) in the 2nd part of the sentence, it
is more appropriate to use から
あぶなくて、機械に触らないでください。(お願い)
あぶないですから、機械に触らないでください。
あした会議があって、きょう準備しなければなりません。
あした会議がありますから、きょう準備しなければなりません。（意志）
• The last 2 sentences, remember the original usage of てform –
sequential actions. So, in this case, からis more appropriate to express
a cause and a reason.
15. 「ので」
• Now, when you talking about the reason, ので is another way to express the reason.
• 事故があったので、遅れました。
• The difference between から and ので is that ので is more objectively(客観的)
presents a cause of the speaker, leaving a weak impact on the listener.
• In other words, から is more subjectively(主観的) highlights a cause or a reason.
• ので won’t be used when expression conjecture, command, request, suggestion,
invitation, personal opinion, volition
あぶないから、機械に触るな。（命令-command）
あぶないので、機械に触るな。
あした、忙しいだろうから、昼ごはんを作っておこう。(推測-conjecture)
あした、忙しいだろうので、昼ごはんを作っておこう。
• ので is often used to ask for permission or to make an excuse.
• 用事があるので、お先に失礼します。
• ので can be followed by all plain forms (with noun and na-adj, you need な）
17. 「で」の使い方
• Noun + で could also express a cause.
• 台風で交通が止まって、こまりました。
• ニュースがショックで、ご飯が食べられませんでした。
• However, volitional expression can not be used.
病気であした会社を休みたいです。
病気で会社を休みました。
18. 「とちゅうで」
• 途中で事故があって、遅れてしまいました。
• とちゅうで means ‘during’ or ‘on the way to’

さち：I can’t believe it. It was really big. On top of that (それに), the news was
saying that the fire was caused too.
たくや：Is that so? That’s why I saw trees fell and cars were broken on the way to
the university.

たくや：In fact, I bumped into a wall and made an black eye (目にあざをつくる)
