Do you remember んです expression? ん can be replaced
with の when it is written. So this の is expecting to find an
answer as this is stating the reason why he doesn’t
understand

• When you want to express the idea of trying
something out, you literally say I will do it and see
• You don’t use ~てみる to express the idea of
putting effort into something
• You would not use ~てみる to say I will try hard or
I am going to try to get a good mark
• For these, you can use the volitional form (しようと
思います)or つもりです(するつもりです) (L31)
• You only use ~てみる if you are going to try
something to see what it is like (so in a way, you
are testing it out – having a go at something)
