I) Introduction
The film industry has been an integral part of London for many years, from the later 19th
century to present modern day.
Earlier films seem to be based working classes, poverty and struggling, Dickensian seems to
be of interest to film makers particular because of the class struggle.
An interesting point is that the flicks or know as 'Picture house' was aimed at the poor,
because the rich generally attended opera and ballets, film makers of the time has a large
audience who needed some form of entertainment.

A lot of Post war movies [World War 2] movies revolved around the Ealing comedy, such as
slapstick comedy, the idea maybe with rationing was a morale booster to the nation, many
movies about the Second World War were produced as well due to it being recent events.

Here is a scene from the movie Doctor in Clover, it portrays the typical British efficiency and

And Hugh Grant particularly seems to fit the part as an English gentleman starring in all the
three:-The Tall Guy (1989): Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Notting Hill(1999) and Love Actually(2003), all set or partly set in the city.
His character seem similar in all movies middle class, floppy hair from a public school, but
maybe this is reflected in the social changes in London, previously ruined neighborhoods
becoming more affluent and hence reflecting this.

4. Thriller and Horror
Think of London and think of Thriller, Horror and Suspence, espcially in the Hammerhouse
horro movies.
A cliche of old London was the fog, give rise to suspecion, suspense and MURDER! Here is
a typical take on London especially during the victorian era, characters such as 'Jack the
ripper' scoured the streets of London looking for innocent victims to murder!
What London needed was a Champion of Law, Justice, honor and dignity to solve the
troubles of London's street, a man of courage, dignity, honor, intelligence and the passion to
eleminate crime from the streets of London., Mr Sherlock Holmes
