Lesson 4 discovering our solar system (leavitt)
1. Discovering Our Solar System:
Lesson 4 - Henrietta Leavitt
In this lesson, students will review the naming of the
planets, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, and the
stages of research (presearch and research). Students will
then listen to Look Up!: Henrietta Leavitt, Pioneering
Woman and Astronomer by Robert Burleigh. After listening
to the book, students will review how to access Britannica
Image Quest and then copy and paste images related to
Leavitt into a book in book creator. Students will also identify
the title, author, illustrator, publishing and copyright date on
the title page and verso.

9. Galileo was accused of
being a heretic, a person
who opposes Church
teachings. He was found
guilty of heresy.

Galileo Galilei
The Catholic Church, which was
very powerful and influential in
Galileo's day, strongly supported the
theory of a geocentric, or Earth-
centered, universe.
11. Galileo’s
Telescope
Original Galileo telescope which Galileo
used to discover Jupiter. This telescope
is on display at the Institute and
Museum of the History of Science in
Florence, Italy.
12. A telescope is an instrument that allows
people to see distant objects. There are
several different types of telescopes.

13. There are two basic types of light
telescopes: refracting telescopes and
reflecting telescopes. A refracting
telescope uses lenses. A lens is a curved
piece of glass that refracts, or bends, light.
A reflecting telescope uses mirrors. Some
telescopes use both lenses and mirrors.
14. Thousands of artificial satellites orbit Earth.
Some take pictures of the planet that help
meteorologists predict weather and track
hurricanes. Some take pictures of other planets,
the sun, black holes, dark matter or faraway
galaxies. These pictures help scientists better
understand the solar system and universe. Still
other satellites are used mainly for
communications.
15. Radio telescopes
look like huge
bowls. They
collect radio
waves that travel
to Earth’s
surface.

about the solar system, I came across a
name I had never heard of previously.
