1. Understanding Weather Through Time
Lesson 3: Bonnie Bess the Weathervane Horse
In this lesson, students review the legend Rainbow Crow and Young
Zeus and then travel back in time to Colonial America. Students
discuss the research process (presearch, research) and hear how
prior knowledge can help you in the research process. Students use
the key word “weathervane” to search for a book in Destiny Discover
and learn how to locate the book’s call number. Students listen to the
book Bonnie Bess the Weathervane Horse by Alvin Tresselt to
answer the research question: How did people in Colonial America
forecast the weather? After reading the story, students learn a brief
history of weathervanes and then access their digital book in Book
Creator and identify the title, author, and illustrator on the title page.
Students add photos to their Book Creator book from the recently
added folder in Book Creator. Students choose the pictures related to
Bonnie Bess the Weathervane Horse that they want to add to their
digital book.

15. Does anyone have any
thoughts about what people
used to forecast the weather
in Colonial America?
Think about what you already
know about your topic.
16. From my prior knowledge, I know people
used weathervanes to predict the weather
in Colonial America.
17. What resources do you think we
can use to find out more
information about weathervanes?
25. The rooster, the most popular of weathervane
characters, was used in Europe as early as the ninth
century on the roofs of churches in order to ward off
evil and to proclaim good faith. Bringing this tradition
with them, early American colonists placed
weathervanes in the shape of roosters on the tops of
barns and houses.
