2. MY BRIEF
My brief is to produce a topical chat show to be
broadcasted on a local commercial radio station
(that wants to attract more young adult listeners)
and two pages for the working website of the
show.
My target audience is '16-25, middle to
upmarket demographic'. Being 'socially-
conscious' means that the audience are aware
and interested in problems within a society or
community. Therefore, the audience is more
likely to engage with topics that relate to world
issues, affect society and are socially conscious.
3. WHAT ARE 16-25-YEAR OLDS
LISTENING TO?
This age group in particular spent almost
equal amounts of time listening to live radio
(29%), personal digital audio (26%), and
streamed music (25%).
4. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE LISTENING TO PODCASTS IS
INCREASING
Podcasts have become increasingly popular as OfCom's statistics show
weekly podcast listeners has almost doubled in five years.
The steepest growth is now among young adults aged 15-24 – with around
one in five (18.7%) now listening to podcasts every week.
'Radio and TV broadcasters are embracing the medium. Podcast versions of
BBC radio programmes such as Desert Island Discs and Kermode & Mayo’s
Film Review feature regularly in Apple’s iTunes podcast chart. TV
broadcasters are increasingly interested in podcasts as a source of material
for TV shows, or as an extension of established series (such as ITV’s podcast
Love Island: The Morning After).'.
5. BBC SOUNDS
Ofcom’s research shows that UK listeners access podcasts from
a range of sources. The most used were the BBC website and
app (used by 36% of podcast listeners), YouTube (26%) and
iTunes (25%). Other sources included streaming services such as
Spotify, and newspapers’ websites or apps.
