4. DEFINITION
Anemia is a decrease in the RBC count,
Hemoglobin and Hematocrit values resulting in
a lower ability for the blood to carry oxygen to
body tissues. When anemia comes on slowly,
the symptoms are often vague and may include
feeling tired, weakness, shortness of breath or
a poor ability to exercise.
9. TYPES OF ANEMIA
•Iron deficiency anemia-
# Excessive loss of iron.
# Women are at risk(for menstrual blood and growing of fetus).
•Megaloblastic anemia-
# Less intake of vitamin B12 and folic acid.
# Red bone marrow produces abnormal RBC. E.g.- Cancer drugs.
•Pernicious anemia-
# Inability of stomach to absorb vitamin B12 in small
intestine.

11. TYPES OF ANEMIA
•Hemolytic anemia-
# RBC plasma membrane ruptures.
# Maybe parasites, toxins, antibodies.
•Thalassemia-
# Less synthesis of hemoglobin. Found in population of
Mediterranean Sea.
•Sickle cell anemia-
# Hereditary blood disorder, characterized by red blood cells that
assume an abnormal rigid, sickle shape.
12. TYPES OF ANEMIA
•Aplastic anemia-
# Destruction of red bone marrow.
# Caused by toxins, gamma radiation.
•Hemorrhagic anemia-
# Excessive loss of RBC through bleeding, stomach ulcers,
menstruation.
13. CAUSES OF ANEMIA
1.Excessive blood loss,
2.Reduced production of RBC,
3.Excessive destruction of blood cell,
4.Destruction of bone marrow.
14. SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA
• Easy fatigue and loss of energy.
• Unusually rapid heartbeat, particularly with exercise.
• Shortness of breath and headache, particularly with
exercise.
• Difficulty concentrating.
• Dizziness.
• Pale skin.
• Leg cramps.
• Insomnia.
15. SIGNS OF ANEMIA
•Brittle nail and hair.
•Atrophy of the papillae of the tongue.
•Angular stomatitis.
•Spoon shaped nail.
