Gender equality is a natural way linked to conserve a social and
ecological balance and is vital to the realization of human rights for
all. The overall objective of gender equality is a society in which
women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations
in life.

To be educated; to own property; to vote; and to
earn a fair and equal wage.

Many people believe in gender stereotypes.
Women are thought to be subordinate to men.
Many girls don’t get the support that boys get.
In many families, once girls finish school, they are encouraged by
their families to see marriage as their main aim in life. Girls leave
school due to poverty, inadequate schooling facilities and
discrimination. Providing equal education to children of all
communities, especially girls continues to be a challenge in India.7

Learning to read and write led some women to question the
situation of women in society because there is very poor education
for women.
Women are not allowed to study in some places.
Earlier it was believed that if woman learnt to read and write, she
would bring bad luck to her husband and become a widow!

Women’s right and justice got strengthen during the 19th and 20th
century. Women now got the right to study and go to school.
Other spheres like political reform, violence and health- where the
situations of womens and girls has improved. Women have struggled
to bring these changes.

- Protesting- The women’s movement raises its voice when
violations against women take place or a law acts against their
interests.
- Showing Solidarity- Women show unity with other women. 13
