MEANING OF GENDER
The word, gender refers to the fact of being male or
female, especially when considered with reference to
social and cultural differences. In fact, gender is a social
construct and not determined by biological difference. In
this way, by gender we mean the many social values and
stereotypes our cultures attach to the biological
distinction of male and female. It is a term that helps us
to understand many of the inequalities and relationship
between men and women in a society.

Gender role in a family.
A family makes clear distinction between boys and
girls even before the birth of a child. This is
because, quite often parents want to boy rather
than a girl child. They involved even in female
foeticides.
Gender role in community.
1. Stereotypes
Girls are a burden on their parents.
Girls are not able to play outdoor games.
Girls are physically and mentally weak.

development of a region or country. In fact, they hinder us from
looking at special qualities or skill of an individual that are different
from others.
Gender role in schools.
Schools are the temples of learning. Children gather here to
develop many social behaviours, discipline, team spirit, co-
operation, rules and regulations in the schools.
Gender role in Public Places
For centuries, a women is viewed as an object. This belief
has influenced the attitude of people towads women. A
serious features of public places is that an increasing no. of
incidents of violence against women is taking places these
days.

inequality. When a girl is married at an early age, she I
ignorant and uneducated. This makes her lead a life of
dependency that creates gender inequality.

Before 2005, women in our society had no right to
inherit property . This made her economically weak
and inequal.
9. STEPS TAKEN BY THE GOVERMENT
EQUAL RIGHTS
Every citizen, a man or women not less than 18 yrs of age, is
given the right to vote. The government has passed the acts to
give equal share to the women in the property of their parents.
Eduaction
Our government has been emphasizing on woman
education. For this, many new schools and colleges have
been opened only for women.
Creche facilities
The government has passed laws that make it
mandatory for organisations that have more than 30
women employees to provide creche facilities.

The government has passed the anti-dowry law
that declares giving and taking dowry as illegal.
The national commission for women
The National commission for women has been set
up in 1990 to safeguard the rights.

Women individually and collectively have struggled to
bring about , many favourable changes for
themselves. This struggle is known as the Women’s
Movement. Many men have also supported the
women’s Movement.
Campaigning
It is an important part of women’s movement. It
aims to acgieve a certain purpose or goal in a
planned way.

To raise public awareness on women’s rights is an
important part of the women’s movement. People are
made aware through street plays, songs and public
meetings.
Protesting
Protesting is a method of struggle of an individual
or a group of people against the unfavourable law or
policy. Public rallies and demonstrations are a very
powerful way of protesting.
