Lacquer work is a traditional art form from Bihar, India where resin produced by lac bugs is used to create shiny, durable, and waterproof finishes on materials like wood. Some famous centers for lacquer work in Bihar are Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Madhubani, which are known for producing valuable lacquer bangles. There are two main types of lac resin used - ranjeem lac from non-kusum plants and kusumi lac from non-lac plants. Lacquer is obtained by extracting ground lac flakes with hot water or sodium carbonate solution and is produced naturally when lac insects suck sap from trees and secrete lac resin.
