The core function of a computer is to process
raw data into information, a task which is done
by the microprocessor

4. Types of Computer
There are three basic kinds of computers.
This is based on the hardware structure and the
way physical quantities are represented in a
computer. The following are the three types.
• Analog computer
• Digital computer
• Hybrid computer

6. Analog computer
• Analog computers are used to process analog
data
• Analog data is of continuous nature and which
is not discrete or separate
• Such type of data includes temperature,
pressure, speed weight, voltage, and depth etc
• These quantities are continuous and having an
infinite variety of values

• It measures continuous changes in some
physical quantity e.g. the change of
temperature is measured by a Thermometer,

• The weight is measured by Weights machine.

There are following characteristics of analog
computer.
 Speed
 No state (1) & (0)
 Easy to develop & small memory
 Calculate analog quantities
 Result not reliable
 Give output in the form of graphs

Analog computer has come to refer to
• Devices and media that represent
Store images ,Sound, and motion pictures etc

• Analog computers can have a very wide range
of complexity
• Slide rules and monographs are the simplest,
while naval gun fire control computers and
large hybrid digital/analogue computers were
among the most complicated
• Very complicated for containing output for the
users some time

14. Digital Computer
• “A computer that performs calculations and
logical operations with quantities represented
as digits, usually in the binary number system
of “0” and “1”.
• The digital computers perform arithmetic and
logic operations with discrete values
• Digital computers are unbeatable for high
speed precision in arithmetic operations, data
storage, and documentation

• Digital watch,
• Digital petrol stations,
• Calculator,
• and the computer, which we use nowadays, are
the examples of digital computers

21. Hybrid Computers
• Hybrid computers are the combination of
analog and digital computers.
• Hybrid computers use analog to digital
conversion and digital to analog conversion,
and may input or output either analog or digital
data.

22. Characteristics of Hybrid
Computer
There are the following characteristics of
hybrid computers.
 Reliable & Provide accurate result.
 Work fast & Speedy.
 Helpfulin hospitals.
 Given output in both graphic &
numeric form.
 Both qualities in these computers.

23. Hybrid Computer
Uses:-
 Used in hospital (ICU) .
 Scientific laboratories .
 Used in petrol pumps .
 Used in industrial unit.
Example :-
ICU hospital computer .

24. Hybrid Computer
• In hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an
analog device is used which measures patient’s
blood pressure and temperature etc, which are
then converted and displayed in the form of
digits.

25. Hybrid Computer
• A petrol pump contains a processor that
converts fuel flow measurements into quantity
and price values.
