The document discusses the improvements made from the author's preliminary editing task to their final film product. Key areas of growth included stronger editing skills like smoother transitions between shots, improved camera work using a tripod for steady shots, the addition of sound effects and music, and greater attention to continuity across costumes, lighting, and more. Conducting both the preliminary and final projects provided valuable lessons and experience that will allow the author to continue progressing their filmmaking abilities.
1. Evaluation 7
Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity
editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to full product?
2. I believe a vast amount of improvement has been made since
my preliminary task to my final film product. In analysing my
preliminary task and my final piece I have picked up some
ways in which this is apparent.
3. Editing
My skills in editing, for example, have greatly improved
from the preliminary task in a number of ways, one
being the cutting transitions between the raw footage.
In the preliminary task the transition from shot to shot
was quite jumpy and had glitches which disengaged the
audience as it did not maintain continuity and a sense
of reality. This was further reinforced by the sound
editing where sound was overlapped in scenes.
However taking all the mistakes that were made in the
preliminary I was adamant to weed these out for my
final production and as a result, I determined myself
into learning how to use the editing software (Premier
CS6) efficiently with the right techniques through online
tutorials. As a result my final piece flows smoothly with
no jumps or glitches in the transition or any sound
malfunctions, creating a smoothly constructed opening
two minutes. In addition my editing skills where so far
improved I was able to add SFX into my final piece
further improving my film. Overall in my final pieces I
implemented: Cutting on action, cutting on cross-frame
movement: the reveal shot, shot reverse shot cutting
and many more editing techniques.
4. Narrative
In my preliminary task the narrative was very forthcoming and
directly portrayed to the audience. However in my final
production me and my group opted to withhold from giving
away too much about the storyline of the film.Rather we gave
our audiences clues and hints from shot to shot building up a
subtle story. By doing this we create a sense of enigma
amongst the audience giving them something to think about
right from the start of the film and not overwhelming them right
at the start with a cemented plot.
5. Camera Work Improvement
From analysing my preliminary I
learned that for my final piece I would
have to use a large range of shot
variation and distances rather then just
over the shoulder shots and close ups,
which was what my preliminary mostly
consisted of.
In addition I learned that when not
using a tripod shots are very shaky and
as a result give the material an ameuter
feel. This was a valuable learning curve
as for my final production I used a
tripod which resulted in steady shots
providing continuity and realism to my
product giving it a professional feel.
This caused less confusion for
audiences.
6. Sound
My preliminary included dialogue but did
not include music, and as a result the
audience where disengaged within the first
few seconds. For my final piece I wanted to
explore the use of non-diegetic sound. I
believe the inclusion of fasted pace music
and no dialogue creates an atmosphere of
tension and action very effectively and
conveys this to the audience better then
any speech, keeping the audience
interested and engaged and wanting to see
the rest of the film. This worked very well in
my final piece as the music matched
perfectly with the footage
.
7. Continuity
In the pre production tasks there was an issue with costumes
of the characters not being consistent, for example the
glasses of one of the female roles where on in some shots but
where not in other shots. This disorients the audience and
shuns the professionalism of the production.
In our final production me and my group strongly adhered to
keeping all aspects of our filming continuous throughout so
our production does reflect professionalism and realism.
8. Lighting
Additionally, the footage used in my
preliminary task was very dark and
very difficult to see clearly. I had not
given enough consideration to lighting.
Although for the final piece we shot
scenes at night we strongly adhered to
having some sort of lighting from the
surroundings i.e. street lamps so our
footage would be bright enough for the
audience to watch with ease.
We also used IMOVIE to adjust the
brightness and saturation fixtures of the
footage so our footage would reflect a
professional quality.
9. Conclusion
After conducting an evaluation it is clear that there is a great
difference between the two productions and a vast improvement. My
opening displays a greater deal of editing, professionalism, musical
skills, and camera techniques, then my previous preliminary piece. It
has really improved my directing, and film making abilities, and is a
valuable learning curve. With the experience behind me, I am
confident I can produce an even better production than this film
opening, Like I did with my preliminary .as I learned vast amounts by
making mistakes in my preliminary and correcting them for my final
piece. To further reinforce my preliminary also helped me test certain
shots which I went on to use in my final piece such as the match on
action and the shot reverse shot. The knowledge I gained from
conducting both productions I believe has put me in a position where
I can effectively produce professional, realistic and continuity rich
material.
