The document provides guidance for the planning and pre-production stage of a music video project. It discusses developing a visual plan by pre-visualizing the concept, creating storyboards and shot lists. These tools are used to establish the relationship between the visuals and music, and to structure the filming process. The document also provides templates for a storyboard and shot list to plan the sequencing, shots, and scenes needed to bring the video idea to life. Location information and a production crew contact list are suggested to be included for organizational planning.
3. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
• You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
• The following tasks are part of your visual planning
• Pre-visualisation and concept boards
• Storyboarding
• Shot list
4. Pre-visualisation/Concept Boards
• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
• Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

5. Location, shots and post production
For my music video, I am going to film in my local town. This will give my video
a sense of realism and allows the audience to relate. I will also film in quite
poor working class areas as this is stereotypically where the largest amount of
mistreated woman are based. This leads to the audience believing the message
of the video more therefore the message will be conveyed more effectively.
I will include a number of close shots when I go to focus on the main
characters. For example, the opening lyric of the song is “Said who's that girl
there”. For this line, I will do a close shot of a girl looking at the camera looking
depressed. This is so the audience know exactly who the lyrics are describing
and so that the tone of the song is displayed right at the start of the video. This
will then foreshadow the tone for the rest of the song. I will also include
different medium shots of different events that happen in the video. For
example, all the shots when the man is pushing around the girl. They will have
to be medium shots as the audience need to see everything that is happening.
6. Location, shots and post production
• The music video will be filmed in quite dim lighting as I want the
lighting and environment to portray the tone of the song. This will
increase the atmosphere that I want to displayed in the video. As well
as that, to convey the tone even more I will add different effects and
post production edits to the video. I will change the saturation to
make the video seem less vibrant and more negative. I may also
decrease the colour tones to make the video seem more depressing
and not as cheerful. I will add a depressing but cinematic effect as
want the video to look professional however, it cant look vibrant as
then the correct atmosphere wont be portrayed.
7. Structural breakdown
• Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus,
verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
• You can use this as the master template for your production, then
add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual
plan
8. Song Lyrics Shots and what happens
Said who's that girl there
I wonder what went wrong so that she had to roam
the streets
She doesn't’t do major credit cards I doubt he does
receipts it all not quite legitimate
And what a scummy man
Just give him half a chance I bet he’ll rob you if he
can
Can see it in his eyes, yeah that he's got a driving ban
amongst some other offences
And I've seen him with girls of the night
He told Roxanne to put on her red light
They're all infected but he'll be alright
'Cause he's a scumbag, don't you know
I said he's a scumbag, don't you know!
Instrumental
Although you're trying not to listen I bet your eyes
are staring at the ground
She makes a subtle proposition
I'm sorry love I'll have to turn you down
And oh he must be up to something
Want half a chance to show he's more than likely
I've got a feeling in my stomach
I start to wonder what his story might be
What his story might be
Close shot of the girl-depressed
Walking the streets-medium shot
Close shot of girl
Close shot of man
Man steals girls cigarette off her
Close shot of man again-concentrate on eyes
The man with the girl-medium shot
Close shot of man again-looking intimating to make
audience feel uncomfortable
Girl walking round town-medium and long shots
Girl trying to get business with other men-medium
shot
Man walking around town-different shots from
behind and side
9. Song Lyrics Shots and what happens
They said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here Around, here
And look here comes a ford mondeo
Isn't he mister inconspicuous
And he don't have to say 'owt
She's in the stance ready to get picked up
And she's delighted when she sees him
Pulling in and giving her the eye
Because she must be f******* freezing
Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky
And don't stop in the winter no and
They said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here
They said it changes when the sun goes down
Over the river going out of town
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here, Around here
Man pushing round the girl-medium and close
shots
Girl trying to find more business, medium shots
The man comes and comforts the girl and keeps
her from the cold -medium shot.
Man pushing round girl again-medium shots
Carrying on pushing her around the town
Pushing her around over the bridge, medium shots
10. Song Lyrics Shots and what happens
And what a scummy man
Just give him half a chance
I bet he'll rob you if he can
Can see it in his eyes that he's got a nasty plan
I hope you're not involved at all
The man being calm and nice with erh-medium
shot
Ends on close hot of girl looking depressed.
11. Storyboarding
• Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
• Provides a basis for production
• Suggested online storyboard creators are:
• http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
• http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
• Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
• There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
12.
13.
14.
15. Shot List
• Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video – it is both a creative tool for planning
and practical tool for filming
• It should work in partnership with your storyboard
• It will be your working document when you film
• It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
• It should also have information on performers in the scene and other
props, etc
• Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
18. Production Group Info
• Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of
production, using a table is suggested
Names Contact infomation Roles
Louis Biddles 07939447427 Director, editer, sound
technician, idol, role
model
Kai Mortimer 07939695962 The main male character
Lewis Wright 07415213056 Extra man
Caitlin Hymes 07702499817 The main female
character
19. Location information
• Information and images of your location[s] for filming
• You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
20. • For my music video, I have decided to film in lower class public. This
will include council estates, roadsides and bridges. I have access
these places as they are public places therefore everyone in the
community is open to use them.
• Specifically, I have planned to film in Sainsbury's car park and in a
small council estate in Selby. If these filming locations aren't possible
I will film in the leisure Centre cark park and choose another estate.
