The document analyzes the use of postmodern techniques in the author's music video. It discusses how the video uses a "hall of mirrors" effect to depict the main character's confusion over her boyfriend cheating, and how a close-up shot of the boyfriend watching a violent movie portrays him as abusive. It also describes how close-up shots of the main character's facial expressions create sympathy and convey her distress, and how a high angle shot makes her seem vulnerable after finding out about the cheating. Finally, it discusses how a slow-motion effect emphasizes the shock of discovering the betrayal.
2. Postmodern Effect
One of my favorite scenes within the music video is the hall of mirror effect. This
is where the main character stand in front of a mirror and through the mirror we
see multiple copies of the main character. This effect is called the hall of mirror
effect. This is an inspiration by Michel gonry's work where he likes to use the
effect of the hall of mirrors which is the main aspect of postmodernism. We
decided to use this in the scene where she is raging on the phone to her friend
standing in front of the mirror where we could see multiple copies of her
through the mirrors. This is to have an effect on the audience to confuse them
to make the scene look distorted. This allows the audience to feel what the girl
is feeling as she may be confused and distorted in how her boyfriend, the one
she loves could cheat on her. It makes the audience connect with the
character almost feeling the same and makes the audience look at the scene
more closely which copies the idea that the girl may be looking and over
thinking into how her boyfriend could of cheated on her.
3. Post modern effect
Another aspect of post modern effect used in our music video is when the
boyfriend was sitting on the wall watching a violent movie. The camera had
shown an extreme close up shot to what the boy was watching. This is also a
point of view shot to show the audience what the boy was watching making
them optimistic on why he was watching a violent movie. This could tell the
audience that he is into violence and so he could be violent and aggressive
almost making the boyfriend character a villain in the music video. It also adds
realism to the shot as the audience adopt the same view as he character as
the audience has an insight into what the character see. In this specific scene
we have an idea that the boy is abusive and made the character more
stereotypical to a bad boy by the mise en scene which is what he was wearing
which was a black hoody. People often portrays boys with hoodies as trouble
and in this case this is what we tried to emphasize to the audience
4. Camera Angles
One of the camera angle effect that we have used in our music video is a
close up shot on the main character sitting on the floor on the bus. The
close up shot is of the girl looking depressed and uncomfortable. The close
up shots gives the audience a better view on how the girl is feeling by her
facial expression. This creates sympathy for the girl and allows the
audience to see the reaction of the character and allows the audience to
connect with the character making us feel what she is feeling. The fast
pace of the music video and the close up shot of the girls facial expression
builds up tension and makes the audience want to know what has caused
the girl to feel so distressed and upset having them sitting on the edge.
5. Camera angles
In our music video, we have decided to use an establishing shot of the
view of the famous buildings in London Bridge to introduce the main
character to the scene which in other words called pre-lap. This was used
to show the audience where the action is taking place. This shot was used
to introduce the character into the scene rather than just go to the scene
straight away as It gives the audience an insight on where the characters
location is based on. The establishing shot allows the audience to take in
the layout.
6. Camera angels
When filming for our music video, we decided to use a high angle shot
when the main character was on the floor crying and looked like she was
going insane. The purpose of having the effect of the high angle shot is to
tell the audience that the girl is vulnerable and we are looking down at
her. This makes the audience feel sympathy and helpless towards the
character. This effect is to make the character look much more smaller and
tells the audience that the main character is vulnerable in the sense that
she I heart broken and depressed that her boyfriend had cheated on her
and makes the audience feel sorry for the character.
7. Effects
In the middle of the music video we have decided to put an effect on the
main character where she walks into the bedroom to find her boyfriend
cheating on her with her best friend. The slow motion scene creates such an
effect on the Audience as it emphasizes on the fact that the girl drops her bag
in disbelief of her boyfriend cheating on her. This creates realism to the music
video and shows the audience that the girl was not expecting to walk in to find
that her boyfriend was cheating on her with her friend. The slow motion effect
also makes that scene the main focus of the music video making it easier for
the audience to know what the whole music video is based on and to show
what the other scenes within the music video is all about, For example the
scenes where the girl breaks down and cries. The fact that there is a slow
motion effect on that specific scene makes tells the audience what the cause
of the girls depression is which and creates a clear understanding of the whole
music video.
