• Ways Forward
Overview
-designed to address the needs and aspirations of
the Filipino learners in the 21st century, who face
various challenges and opportunities in a rapidly
changing and globalized world
-aims to develop learners who are Makadiyos,
Makatao, Makakalikasan, Makabansa ( the core
values of the Philippine society and culture)
According to Duterte, MATATAG will have four critical components:
•MAke the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready,
active, and responsible citizens;
•TAke steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and
services;
•TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-being,
inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and
•Give support to teachers to teach better.
*After the launch of MATATAG, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, VP-Sec. Duterte,
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Rep. Roman Romulo,
and other education partners penned their commitments and support for the new basic
education agenda
Revisions in the new basic education curriculum include the 1.
reduction in the number of competencies,
2. more focus on development of foundational skills such as
literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills to kindergarten to
Grade 3 learners.
3. the intensified formation of learners' values and character
development in adherence to the Good Manners and Right
Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education Act as well as the
articulation to 21st Century Skills.
4. Inclusion of peace competencies highlighting the promotion of
non-violent actions, and development of conflict resolution skills

Teachers and learners to customize their learning experiences according to
their interests, abilities, and contexts promoting diversity and equity
Teachers to provide opportunities to apply their learning in real-life

After going through the revision process, we have subjected the
curriculum to a public review, which I have previously
mentioned, is something novel as this is the first time that a
national curriculum was subjected to public scrutiny," she said.
"Shaping Papers gained 96 percent public approval rate in a
survey with 4,843 respondents which includes students,
teachers, public/private school owners, government agencies,
private organizations, and non-government organizations," she
added.
The review, Andaya noted, was guided by the curriculum review
findings, international large-scale assessments and benchmarks,
as well as the MATATAG Education Agenda.
The Philippines adopted the K to 12 Program by virtue of
Republic Act 10533 which aimed to enhance the Philippine
Basic Education System by strengthening the curriculum and
increasing the number of years of basic education from 10 years
to 12 years.
The phased implementation of K to 12 was adopted starting
in School Year (SY) 2011-2012 and was implemented in the
succeeding years, where Andaya admitted the DepEd "hit
snags."
She also noted that the shifting local and global landscapes
created an impact in various sectors, including education.
The review's findings, Andaya said, include congested
curriculum content, misplaced prerequisite
learning competencies, and cognitive demand
imbalance.

Think of class scenario. Imagine the setting
and the context.
How the MATATAG curriculum can be
implemented? What challenges and
opportunities will there be?
The MATATAG curriculum has been
met with mixed reactions from
various stakeholders, such as
teachers, parents, students and
education experts.
Issues
The curriculum is still in its pilot
phase and has not been fully
implemented nationwide. It is
currently being tested in selected
schools in different regions in the
country.
Teachers’ retooling must be geared
toward the appreciation and
understanding of the features of
the MATATAG curriculum
It fosters a
sense of
nationalism and
cultural identity
among learners
by integrating
the values and
history of the
Philippines in all
subjects.
Benefits
It enhances the
scientific and
technological
literacy of Filipino
learners by
exposing them to
various fields of
ST, such as
robotics,
biotechnology,
and AI
It develops the
communication
and critical
thinking skills of
Filipino learners
by emphasizing
the use of Filipino
and English as
languages of
instruction and
learning.
It prepares the
Filipino learners
for the globalized
world by
incorporating the
knowledge and
perspectives of
other countries
and cultures in
the curriculum.
It requires a lot
of resources
and support
from the
government,
such as
adequate
funding,
training, and
equipment .
Challenges
It poses a heavy
workload and
pressure on the
teachers who
have to adjust to
the new
curriculum and
adopt new
pedagogical
approaches and
strategies.
It may cause
confusion and
difficulty for
students, who
have to cope with
the changes in
the curriculum
and the
expectations of
the new learning
outcomes.
It may undermine
the importance of
other subjects
and disciplines,
such as
mathematics,
social studies,
and arts, that are
explicitly included
in the MATATAG
acronym.

How much do we know?
Let’s complete this line.
The framework of the MATATAG curriculum is a set of principles and
guidelines that support the design, implementation, and evaluation of the
new learning program for Kindergarten to Grade 10. The framework
consists of four main components: the curriculum goals, the curriculum
content, the curriculum delivery, and the curriculum assessment.
Curriculum Goals
*the desired outcomes; based on the vision, mission, and core values DepEd and the Philippine Development Plan
- The goals are:
1- to produce job-ready, active, and responsible citizens who can contribute to the development of the
country and the world
2- to provide learners with relevant and meaningful learning experiences that develop their 21st century
skills
3-to promote learner well-being, inclusiveness, and positive learning environment that respect the
diversity and uniqueness of each learner
4- to support teachers to teach better by providing them with adequate resources, training, and guidance
Curriculum Content
ü - The set of learning competencies that define what the learners should know, understand,
and be able to do at the end of each grade level
ü - organized into 5 learning areas: Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics, Makabansa,
and Good Manners and Right Conduct
ü - aligned with the national and global standards and benchmarks, such the PQF, K to 12 Basic
Education Program, and the SDGs
Curriculum Delivery
ü The process of facilitating and managing the learning activities and resources
that enable the learners to achieve the learning competencies
ü Guided by the principles of learner-centeredness, developmentally-
appropriateness, contextualization, integration, differentiation, and innovation
As a teacher, you are expected to be
an instructional leader in your school,
who, among other things, helps
ensure that the school is a safe and
conducive venue for learning.
Creating a safe and comfortable
learning environment in schools
means that students feel accepted,
respected, and heard. They must also
feel that they have a right to express
themselves and be respected for their
opinions and for who and what they
are.
•Do you think your teaching contributes to the
complete development of your students and
prepares them to become responsible 21st century
citizens?
Curriculum Assessment
ü The process of gathering and analyzing evidence of
the learners’ progress and achievement of the
learning competencies.
ü Informed by the principles of alignment, validity,
reliability, and fairness
To address the issues,

  • 14. After going through the revision process, we have subjected the curriculum to a public review, which I have previously mentioned, is something novel as this is the first time that a national curriculum was subjected to public scrutiny," she said. "Shaping Papers gained 96 percent public approval rate in a survey with 4,843 respondents which includes students, teachers, public/private school owners, government agencies, private organizations, and non-government organizations," she added. The review, Andaya noted, was guided by the curriculum review findings, international large-scale assessments and benchmarks, as well as the MATATAG Education Agenda. The Philippines adopted the K to 12 Program by virtue of Republic Act 10533 which aimed to enhance the Philippine Basic Education System by strengthening the curriculum and increasing the number of years of basic education from 10 years to 12 years.
  • 15. The phased implementation of K to 12 was adopted starting in School Year (SY) 2011-2012 and was implemented in the succeeding years, where Andaya admitted the DepEd "hit snags." She also noted that the shifting local and global landscapes created an impact in various sectors, including education. The review's findings, Andaya said, include congested curriculum content, misplaced prerequisite learning competencies, and cognitive demand imbalance.
