1) The target audience for the thriller production was 15-24 year olds, as thrillers are most popular with this age range.
2) To attract this audience, the filmmakers conducted research by analyzing other successful thriller openings and distributing questionnaires to gauge what aspects of thrillers the target audience enjoys.
3) Key elements the audience likes that were incorporated into the opening include tension, music, enigmas, protagonists and antagonists. The opening features a young female victim being kidnapped to appeal to and generate sympathy from the target demographic.
2. Our target audience for our production was people aged between 15-
24 year olds. We chose this as our target audience as this is the most
popular age range who watch thrillers. This means that people
within this age range will be inrtigued to watch our thriller.
To get our thriller production to reach our target audience we had to
do some research to find out what they expected to see from a
thriller and what they want to see in a thriller so that we can aim our
thiller around these ideas.
Target Audience
3. In order to create a thriller opening that our target audience will be enticed
to watch, we did some primary research where we looked at other opening
scenes of thriller films. As the films that we looked gained a lot of oney
which suggests that they were very popular with their audience. This
meant that these films would give us an idea what the audience enjoy
watching.
By looking at other films of the thriller genre, we can see what genre
conventions they have conformed to or challenged. From this we will be
able to see what would be successful to include in our production.
One of the thriller openings I looked at was ‘Silence of the lambs’. The
genre conventions that were used during this opening sequence was
appealing to their audience and therefore we decided to use similar
conventions and ideas from this in order to attract our audience.
Primary Research- scene analyses
4. As part of our primary research we created a questionnaire for people to
fill out in order to attract our target audience. This was so we could find
out what they expect to be included in a thriller and what aspects of
thriller films they enjoy so that we could include these aspects in our
production.
We created 10 questions and distributed them randomly to people in the
age range of our target audience.
These questionnaires were effective because they gave us relevant
information about what the audience want us to include within our
thriller production e.g. enigma, tension music, antagonists and
protagonists.
Primary Research- questionnaire
5. We also conducted secondary research where we looked on the BFI
website. From this we were able to gather ideas for our thriller in
order to appeal to our audience.
From the facts and figures shown on the BFI website we were able to
see that the largest audience was with the action genre. This is why
we decided to use aspects of the action genre within our thiller in
order to appeal to a wider audience.
Seconday Data- BFI
6. We decided that our thiller was going to be a sub-genre of a thriller and it
would be classed as a psychological thriller.
One of the conventions we used within this opening scene was the idea
that the vicitim was a young, innocent girl. We used a young girl as the
character as this is around the age of our target audience and therefore
they will be able to sympathise with this character early on in the film.
One other psychological thriller convention that we used was a charcter
(antagonist) who kidnaps this girl and puts her in the boot of a car with a
gun. This creates an enigma for the audince and makes them ask lots of
questions.
Appealing to our audience
7. The distribution of our production is very important in order to get it to our
target audience. As our target audience is quite young and they use a lot of
technology then we had to focus on this factor and distribute our
production via the internet.
Good ways of promoting our production is though social media sites such
as facebook and twitter as these are places which people are on every day.
Also youtube is another good way of promoting the thriller by putting
teasers for the audience to see. As it is on youtube anyone can access it
from across the world.
