2. 4 Essential Components of Explicit Instruction
Explicit Instruction is a well-researched, highly
effective instructional strategy. The following four
components are essential to explicit instruction.
Including these components is beneficial for both
students and the teacher. When implemented
correctly, these can have great impact on student
performance and learning.
3. Use a logical sequence
within lessons.
● Content should be sequenced from
easiest to understand to most complex
● Lesson content should build and
connect in a logical way
4. Provide clear models and
explanations of content.
Teacher modeling includes:
● Teaching new content
● Connecting to previously learned content
● Think alouds about the content taught
● Explaining teacher problem solving
5. Provide multiple
opportunities to respond and
appropriate feedback.
● Student responses should include
○ Verbal (eg: choral response)
○ Written (eg: white boards)
○ Performance (eg: actions)
● Affirmative and corrective feedback
should be consistent throughout the
lesson and tied to student performance
6. Provide a range of examples
and nonexamples to
highlight the content being
taught.
● Examples should be clear and easy to
understand.
● Non-examples should show a direct
contrast to the example and not cause
confusion.
