Editor's Notes

  1. There are different aspects of cinematography, format which is what technology is used for filming e.g. DVCAM or HD, picture composition and framing which is the urrm calculations of distance, angle and lens which are felt to be the most effective. “ what is left out of the frame is as important as what is put in” LIGHTNING- which conveys the mood and helps the audience understand elements within the scene creating a sense of place, time, weather and even empire state of mind- Jay Z “ painting with light is a highly creative and time consuming skillz”
  2. The order of the shots chosen by the editor sets the space and time of the film and guides the audience’s attention. Good editing can produce shock, excitement and fascination. “ the editor finds a rhythm that compliments the style of film”. In most main stream film the edits are invisible and the images appear to flow in a continuous fashion. “each edit should provide further information that helps build a story”. They used to be made up of a single shot where everything happened in real time it is now more sophisticated and time is able to be manipulated.
  3. Audio filmed production is the sound that is recorded during production such as dialogue bono smith foal artist his job: every time an actor moves on screen he creates the appropriate sound of the clothes then adds footsteps then adds effects e.g. glasses or keys clinking then he layers it up “ the human ear is highly selective and filters out extraneous sound” Post production sound- the stage when all of the sound sources are mixed together to create the final soundtrack. The levels of each sound are balanced so that important sounds are promoted and others are in the background. A narration and voiceover are recorded during this stage. Music- the music used in a film can be powerful in recalling the film for the audience and is often exploited for marketing and promotional purposes. Music is an integral part of the film to the extent that it often blends seamlessly with the picture without drawing attention to itself. It can be evocative and emotive and can alter perception all at the same time.. A leit motif is the term used to describe a recurrent theme in a film and is often associated with a person or situation. “the two note theme from Jaws is one of the most famous leit motifs” EFFECTS (BOOOM)- a sound effect is a non verbal sound that can be created in a studio or obtained from a sound library. There is lots of imagination needed in creating sound effects e.g. the boulder in raiders of the lost ark was created by rolling a car down a driveway and the alien spaceships in independence day was produced by screaming baboons.
