WEBSITE DECONSTRUCTIONS
Keeley Maddison
NATIONAL WEBSITE
DECONSTRUCTION CONVENTIONS
• Usability- The usability of a website is essential as it means that it has to be easy to use and navigate through the website, if it is difficult people won’t go on. Looking at Vogue’s website it is very
easy to use because the navigation bar and hyperlinks help a reader to go where they want to. I want to make my website easy to use because then more people can share it on social media and
discuss what they like about the website.
• Website address- The website address is important as if you look it up online it will immediately take you to the website or suggestions in Google. I am going to apply a website address as it is a
typical convention that must be used in all websites.
• Masthead- The masthead is important as people need to know the name of the brand. On Vogue’s website it is placed right at the top in the centre which immediately draws the readers eyes as it
is in the central focus. The masthead font is in a big bold font which stands out for people to recognize the name of the brand. I am going to apply this to my website so people can clearly say the
name of the brand.
• Hyperlink- A hyperlink is a word, sentence or image that can be referenced to another page onto the website. On Vogue’s website the images and navigation bar is hyperlinked. I am going to
apply this to my website because it makes it easier for the reader to navigate their way through the website and it is typical convention. Without hyper link the reader may struggle on where to
find and read articles.
• Images- Various photos are used on the Vogue website, they are used as hyperlinks to articles on the website and they can anchor to the text on what the article is about. On Vogue’s website the
images are bright and vibrant colours which makes the page pop with the simple black and white design. Various of shots are used such as extreme close ups and long shots which makes the
website more interesting because using the same shot will look boring. I want to apply this to my website because without images on my website it would look really dull and no one would be
interested in reading any further into the website. This helps create a visual interest on what the reader likes to read.
• Subscription- At the bottom and in the navigation bar there is an option to subscribe to the magazine. It gives the reader to get it on print or digitally, it gives variety because some people don’t
enjoy reading magazine and prefer to read articles on their phones, iPads, computers etc. I am going to apply this to my website because a subscription can come with offers for the reader, for
example on Vogue’s subscription page you can get a free digital trial, you can get a free welcome gift and get six issues for 9 pound. This will help my target audience if they don’t have much
money and can’t afford the magazine if I put a price on it. Gifts can entice them into reading the magazine.
• Colours- The colours on the layout for Vogue’s website is a very simple black and white colour. They blend really well together and connote elegance together, black connotes power and
sophistication and white connotes innocence and purity. Although the connotations are opposite it attracts and the balance each other out and they work really well together. The images on the
website page add the colour as they are vibrant which makes the website look more aesthetically pleasing. It helps create and interest for the reader because the colours make the website pop
and without the images it would look dull and boring.
• Layout- The layout is very similar to Elle magazine as they use a similar colour scheme and some of the navigation bar options are similar. The overall layout of Vogue magazine is very clean as
everything is separated into clean sections. It is split by different subheadings which makes it easier for the reader to look through the website. If everything was all together the reader would be
confused because it would look messy and disorganized. I am going to apply subheadings on my magazine so it looks more organized and it will help the reader navigate through the website.
• Search box - The search box is placed at the top right hand side of the website page. It is used to help narrow down the type of article you are looking for just by typing a word or phrase. It leads
to a page for results and you can choose the best one for you. I want to apply this to my website because it is a typical convention that is used to help narrow down articles you are looking for if it
isn’t on the main website page.
REGIONAL WEBSITE
DECONSTRUCTION CONVENTIONS
• Usability- the usability of a website is a necessity because the reader must be able to navigate their way through the website without struggling, if it is difficult to navigate then they will not read the website
because they won’t know how to use the website to find the articles they want to read. When I create a website I want to make it easy for the reader to use and if they like it they may want to share it to
their friends on social media which could draw in more readers.
• Website address- The website address is at the top in the internet search bar. It is important because when you look up online it can immediately take you to the website or leave suggestions in Google so
it is easier to find. I am going to apply this to my website as it is a typical convention that is used on all websites.
• Masthead- The masthead is placed right at the top of the website page in the centre which immediately draws the readers eye as it is in the central focus. It is important because people must know the
name of the brand other wise they won’t go on the website if they don’t even know the name. It is colourful and bold which doesn’t make it hard to miss, the masthead of the website is also used as a logo
because that is how people recognise the brand. For my website I am going to apply the masthead right at the top of the website so the first thing people see is the name o the product.
• Hyperlink- On sparks website there are images that are hyperlinked which lead to a different page on the website which discuses what the image is about. The navigation bar is also hyperlinked. I am going
to apply this to my magazine because it makes it easier for the reader to navigate their way through the magazine. If there were no hyperlinks then the reader may have difficulties using the website and
navigating it.
• Images- The background image is a familiar place in the regional area which people form Sunderland will recognise. The images are vibrant and bright which is used to attract the reader as if images were
dull nobody would want to visit the website. I am going to apply images which have autumn themed colours on the clothing because I want to get my theme across properly. This will work well if I use a
white background and black writing.
• Colours- I prefer the colour scheme on the national website. This is because there are far too many colours used on Sparks website. They have used blue, orange, pink, white. I feel like it overwhelms the
reader as there is a lot going on and it looks slightly disorganised. For my website I am going to use autumn themed colours with a white background and black text. This will prevent the reader from being
overwhelmed with lots of bright colours.
• Layout- The layout of the website is very simple and easy to use. Everything is in separate sections which are clear in the navigation bar placed near the top of the website under the masthead. There are
sections underneath the navigation for example one of them is Sunday and what is happening on the radio show all day. What I like about spark is that anyone can become apart of it as a volunteer
whether you are a college student, unit student or someone form the local community. It involves everyone. For my website I want to have a clean layout which will make it easy for the reader t navigate
and I want to use students for my images as they will be my target audience so it would be nice for them to get involved.
• Search box – Although it is not in the images there is a search box on the website on the right underneath the navigation bar. I want to apply this to my website as it can help the reader narrow down
articles they are searching for and it leads to a whole page of results with articles that you have looked for. It helps the reader find things articles they can’t see on the main website page.
• Navigation bar- The navigation bar is placed at the top underneath the masthead. It has separate sections which can lead to their TV station, music station, contact information etc. I would like to apply this
to my website because it helps narrow down articles or information the reader is looking for. The convention benefits the reader as it makes the website more organised which enhances the usability
making it easier to navigate.
• Sponsors- Although I can not find it on the website they have sponsors which is great for regional areas as it shows that the whole community is involved. For my website I would like to put the sponsors at
the bottom of the page because this would mean I can have competitions for my readers and the sponsors also get a shout out which benefits their company.
• Social Media- At the bottom of the website is social media hyperlinks to their social media pages. I would like to apply this to my magazine because social media is very popular especially for my teenage

Website deconstructions

  • 3. DECONSTRUCTION CONVENTIONS • Usability- The usability of a website is essential as it means that it has to be easy to use and navigate through the website, if it is difficult people won’t go on. Looking at Vogue’s website it is very easy to use because the navigation bar and hyperlinks help a reader to go where they want to. I want to make my website easy to use because then more people can share it on social media and discuss what they like about the website. • Website address- The website address is important as if you look it up online it will immediately take you to the website or suggestions in Google. I am going to apply a website address as it is a typical convention that must be used in all websites. • Masthead- The masthead is important as people need to know the name of the brand. On Vogue’s website it is placed right at the top in the centre which immediately draws the readers eyes as it is in the central focus. The masthead font is in a big bold font which stands out for people to recognize the name of the brand. I am going to apply this to my website so people can clearly say the name of the brand. • Hyperlink- A hyperlink is a word, sentence or image that can be referenced to another page onto the website. On Vogue’s website the images and navigation bar is hyperlinked. I am going to apply this to my website because it makes it easier for the reader to navigate their way through the website and it is typical convention. Without hyper link the reader may struggle on where to find and read articles. • Images- Various photos are used on the Vogue website, they are used as hyperlinks to articles on the website and they can anchor to the text on what the article is about. On Vogue’s website the images are bright and vibrant colours which makes the page pop with the simple black and white design. Various of shots are used such as extreme close ups and long shots which makes the website more interesting because using the same shot will look boring. I want to apply this to my website because without images on my website it would look really dull and no one would be interested in reading any further into the website. This helps create a visual interest on what the reader likes to read. • Subscription- At the bottom and in the navigation bar there is an option to subscribe to the magazine. It gives the reader to get it on print or digitally, it gives variety because some people don’t enjoy reading magazine and prefer to read articles on their phones, iPads, computers etc. I am going to apply this to my website because a subscription can come with offers for the reader, for example on Vogue’s subscription page you can get a free digital trial, you can get a free welcome gift and get six issues for 9 pound. This will help my target audience if they don’t have much money and can’t afford the magazine if I put a price on it. Gifts can entice them into reading the magazine. • Colours- The colours on the layout for Vogue’s website is a very simple black and white colour. They blend really well together and connote elegance together, black connotes power and sophistication and white connotes innocence and purity. Although the connotations are opposite it attracts and the balance each other out and they work really well together. The images on the website page add the colour as they are vibrant which makes the website look more aesthetically pleasing. It helps create and interest for the reader because the colours make the website pop and without the images it would look dull and boring. • Layout- The layout is very similar to Elle magazine as they use a similar colour scheme and some of the navigation bar options are similar. The overall layout of Vogue magazine is very clean as everything is separated into clean sections. It is split by different subheadings which makes it easier for the reader to look through the website. If everything was all together the reader would be confused because it would look messy and disorganized. I am going to apply subheadings on my magazine so it looks more organized and it will help the reader navigate through the website. • Search box - The search box is placed at the top right hand side of the website page. It is used to help narrow down the type of article you are looking for just by typing a word or phrase. It leads to a page for results and you can choose the best one for you. I want to apply this to my website because it is a typical convention that is used to help narrow down articles you are looking for if it isn’t on the main website page.
  • 5. DECONSTRUCTION CONVENTIONS • Usability- the usability of a website is a necessity because the reader must be able to navigate their way through the website without struggling, if it is difficult to navigate then they will not read the website because they won’t know how to use the website to find the articles they want to read. When I create a website I want to make it easy for the reader to use and if they like it they may want to share it to their friends on social media which could draw in more readers. • Website address- The website address is at the top in the internet search bar. It is important because when you look up online it can immediately take you to the website or leave suggestions in Google so it is easier to find. I am going to apply this to my website as it is a typical convention that is used on all websites. • Masthead- The masthead is placed right at the top of the website page in the centre which immediately draws the readers eye as it is in the central focus. It is important because people must know the name of the brand other wise they won’t go on the website if they don’t even know the name. It is colourful and bold which doesn’t make it hard to miss, the masthead of the website is also used as a logo because that is how people recognise the brand. For my website I am going to apply the masthead right at the top of the website so the first thing people see is the name o the product. • Hyperlink- On sparks website there are images that are hyperlinked which lead to a different page on the website which discuses what the image is about. The navigation bar is also hyperlinked. I am going to apply this to my magazine because it makes it easier for the reader to navigate their way through the magazine. If there were no hyperlinks then the reader may have difficulties using the website and navigating it. • Images- The background image is a familiar place in the regional area which people form Sunderland will recognise. The images are vibrant and bright which is used to attract the reader as if images were dull nobody would want to visit the website. I am going to apply images which have autumn themed colours on the clothing because I want to get my theme across properly. This will work well if I use a white background and black writing. • Colours- I prefer the colour scheme on the national website. This is because there are far too many colours used on Sparks website. They have used blue, orange, pink, white. I feel like it overwhelms the reader as there is a lot going on and it looks slightly disorganised. For my website I am going to use autumn themed colours with a white background and black text. This will prevent the reader from being overwhelmed with lots of bright colours. • Layout- The layout of the website is very simple and easy to use. Everything is in separate sections which are clear in the navigation bar placed near the top of the website under the masthead. There are sections underneath the navigation for example one of them is Sunday and what is happening on the radio show all day. What I like about spark is that anyone can become apart of it as a volunteer whether you are a college student, unit student or someone form the local community. It involves everyone. For my website I want to have a clean layout which will make it easy for the reader t navigate and I want to use students for my images as they will be my target audience so it would be nice for them to get involved. • Search box – Although it is not in the images there is a search box on the website on the right underneath the navigation bar. I want to apply this to my website as it can help the reader narrow down articles they are searching for and it leads to a whole page of results with articles that you have looked for. It helps the reader find things articles they can’t see on the main website page. • Navigation bar- The navigation bar is placed at the top underneath the masthead. It has separate sections which can lead to their TV station, music station, contact information etc. I would like to apply this to my website because it helps narrow down articles or information the reader is looking for. The convention benefits the reader as it makes the website more organised which enhances the usability making it easier to navigate. • Sponsors- Although I can not find it on the website they have sponsors which is great for regional areas as it shows that the whole community is involved. For my website I would like to put the sponsors at the bottom of the page because this would mean I can have competitions for my readers and the sponsors also get a shout out which benefits their company. • Social Media- At the bottom of the website is social media hyperlinks to their social media pages. I would like to apply this to my magazine because social media is very popular especially for my teenage
