CHAPTER 11 SUFFIXES

SUFFIX: -EMIA
-emia
This suffix is a noun that means a substance is
present in the blood, especially in excess.
Some medical terms that contains this suffix are
hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, hypercalcemia,
hypocalcemia.
HYPERGLYCEMIA AND HYPOGLYCEMIA
HYPERCALCEMIA, HYPOCALCEMIA.
 Hyperglycemia: means high blood sugar levels.This can also
be the indication of diabetes (both type 1 and 2).
 Hypoglycemia: means low blood sugar levels.This is often
related to the treatment of diabetes.
 Hypercalcemia: means too much calcium in the blood.This
is usually a result of an overactive parathyroid glands.
 Hypocalcemia: means the blood has too little calcium.This
is usually a result by the absence of the parathyroid glands.
SUFFIXX: -ITIS
-itis:This suffix means inflammation or inflammatory
diseases
Some medical term examples that contains this suffix
are: adrenalitis, colitis, carditis, etc.
ADRENALITIS, COLITIS, CARDITIS
 Adrenalitis: Is the inflammation of either one or both adrenal
glands.This can lead to an insufficiency of epinephrine or
norepinephrine.
 Colitis: Is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes
inflammation in the digestive tract (the inner lining of the
colon).
 Carditis: Is inflammation of the heart.
