  2. 2. The Endocrine System <ul><li>The endocrine system consist of a group of glands that secretes many hormones. </li></ul><ul><li>These hormones regulate the body activities. </li></ul><ul><li>This activities include sexual function and immune system response. </li></ul>

Endocrine System (cont.) <ul><li>Conditions or diseases of the endocrine system (glands), usually non-inflammatory are termed Endocrinopathy. </li></ul><ul><li>Endo = within </li></ul><ul><li>Pathy = condition or disease </li></ul><ul><li>These conditions/disease include hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. </li></ul><ul><li>Hyperthyroidism- overactive thyroid gland that produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. </li></ul><ul><li>Hypothyroidism- abnormally low production of thyroid hormone. </li></ul>

Hyperglycemia <ul><li>Hyperglycemia is the medical term for having excessive sugar in the blood. </li></ul><ul><li>Hyper= excessive </li></ul><ul><li>glyc= sweet or sugar </li></ul><ul><li>-emia= condition of the blood </li></ul><ul><li>This occurs when the body does not have enough insulin or when the body can not properly use it. </li></ul><ul><li>This disorder is a major complication in people with diabetes. </li></ul>

Hyperglycemia (cont.) <ul><li>This disorder is a major complication in people with diabetes. </li></ul><ul><li>This disorder can become a serious problem if it goes without treatment. </li></ul><ul><li>If not treated, this disorder can possibly lead to ketoacidosis. </li></ul><ul><li>Ketoacidosis is a diabetic coma that occurs when the body does not have enough insulin. </li></ul>

Hyponatremia <ul><li>Hyponatremia- a condition which the sodium levels in the blood are low. </li></ul><ul><li>Hypo= low </li></ul><ul><li>Natr= salt </li></ul><ul><li>-emia= condition of the blood </li></ul><ul><li>Factors of this condition include excessive water intake (during endurance sports). </li></ul><ul><li>This excessive intake causes the sodium levels to drop and causes the cells to swell. </li></ul><ul><li>This swelling can range from mild to severe. </li></ul>
