Katie: "The movement originally begun in 2007 by Tarana Burke
however it only really resurfaced in 2017 after a scandal
around Harevy Weinstein getting accused of sexual harassment
came out."
Katie: "After actor 'Alyssa Milano' embraced the #MeToo
mocement on her social media the movement spread like
wildfire. Within 24 hours of her tweeting her support of teh
movement the hashtag had been shared over 12 million times."
Katie: "People shared their own stories, showed their support
and basically made people aware of how big an issue sexual
harassment towards women is in the current society."
Katie: "The movement aimed to empower women who had endured
sexual violence however ther have also been many cases where
this movement had been used negatively."
Katie: "An example of this movement being used negatively was
when Amber Heard used this movement to air false accusations
against her ex Johnny Depp."
Katie: "This is an example of how a movement can be used to
spread fake news."
Katie: "This issue doesn't only effect women however the
statistics show that 81% of women reported experiencing
sexual harassment or assault however only 43% of men felt
they had experienced this."
#HeForShe
Katie: "HeForShe is a movement founded by the group UN Women.
The movement was created as a movement aiming towards a world
with gender equality."
Katie: "The Key people associated with this movement would be
celebrities Emma Watson, Matt Damon, Barrack Obama and Harry
Styles who all showed their obvious support for the
movement."
Katie: "HeForShe encourages men and boys to involve
themselves in the cause by acting against societys toxic
masculinity and the negative gender stereotypes put on men."
Katie: "The movements opening speech gathered over 11 million
views as well as support from over 750,000 different users

within its first two weeks. They claim to have over two
million activists in thier community at this point."
Katie: "They claim to only partner with leaders who make
tangible commitments towards gender equality."
#StopFundingHate
Katie: "StopFundingHate is a pressure group who focus on
asking companies to stop advertising in (And therefore stop
funding) certain British newspapers using the argument 'fear
and divisiion sell more papers'"
Katie: "The group launches in mid 2016 with Richard Wilson as
its leader."
Katie: "The group even went so far as to launch a fundraiser
in early 2017 which ended up finishing with over £100,000
raised."
Katie: "The campaign called upon large companies such as
Asda, John Lewis, Iceland and many more to cease advertising
in British Newspapers such as The Daily Mail and The Sun."
Katie: "However, there was one company they targeted more
than any others and that was Virgin Media. They claimed their
values were "Totally at odds with The Sun's record of
misleading reporting.""
Katie: "The campaign was successful in a way as companies
such as Lego and The Body Shop stopped advertising in The
Daily Mail."
#BlackLivesMatter
Katie: "Black Lives Matter is a political and social movement
that seeks to highlihg tacism, inequality and dicrimination
experienced by those of colour."
Katie: "In recent years the movement have focused on the
police force and the racially motivated actions and violence
that occur to black people however activism against the
police has been happening for decades."
Katie: "The specific 'Black Lives Matter' hashtag begun in
July of 2013 after the unfortunate event where George
Zimmerman shot an african-american teenager named Trayvon
Martin in 2012. However, the movement was not nationally
recognised until 2014 following the deaths of two men,
Michael Brown and Eric Garner."

Katie: "Protests followed this event in 2014 however the
movement stayed out of national headlines for years up until
the resurgence in 2020. The event that caused was the murder
of George Floyd by policeman Derek Chauvin."
Katie: "It is estimated that around 15 to 26 million people
all around the world were involved in this movement making it
one of the largest activism movements in the world."
Katie: "Due to lockdown and everyone being at home during
this time, this really aided the popularity of this movement
as everyone had the time to support this movement in person
or through clicktivism."
Katie: "During the peak of the 2020 #BlackLivesMatter
movement the hashtag was being used about 3.7 million times a
day on average."
Katie: "It was said that 55% of 13-18 year olds were
participating in this movement in one way or another."
Katie: "The 2020 movement sparked a seperate movement called
#DefundThePolice not only because of George Floyd but also
because of the story of Breonna Taylor who was shot to death
by police after her boyfriend shot an officer in the leg."
Katie: "During the 2020 movement there was also a strike
across the United States where workers performed a walkout to
raise awareness about systemic violence following the murder
of Floyd."
