Caused by bacterium Chlamydia
trachomatis
Transmitted through vaginal,
oral, or anal sexual contact with
infected partner
Can be treated

Signs & Symptoms
Fever
Abdominal pain
Unusual discharge from penis and
vagina
If untreated can cause Pelvis
Inflammatory Disease
Treatments
Treated with antibiotics:
Azithromycin
Doxycycline
6. Gonorrhea
Caused by bacterium Neisseria
gonorrhoeae
Grows rapidly in the reproductive
tract
Transmitted through vaginal,
oral, or anal sexual contact with
infected partner
Infections in genitals, rectum,
eyes, and throat

Pain and burning sensation when
urinating
Yellow or green discharge from penis
and vagina

the herpes simplex virus (HSV)
Type 1 (HSV-1) (Herpes simplex
virus)
Type 2 (HSV-2)
Neither can be cured

Signs & Symptoms
Type 1 (HSV-1) (Herpes simplex virus):
fever, blisters, or cold sores on the lips
Type 2 (HSV-2): painful, watery skin
blisters on or around the genitals or anus
Both types can develop into genital
herpes
Treatments
Symptoms reduced through antiviral
medications:
Acyclovir (Zovirax)
Famciclovir (Famvir)
Valacyclovir (Valtrex)
10. HIV/AIDS
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the
virus that causes Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
HIV destroys the body's immune system by
killing the blood cells that fight infection
AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV
Virus spread through unprotected sex,
sharing needles, and from mother to baby
Neither can be cured

(HPV)
Most common STD/STI
More than 40 types of HPV exist
Transmitted through vaginal, oral,
or anal sexual contact with infected
partner
There is no cure
14. Syphilis Caused by the bacterium
Treponema pallidum
Transmitted through vaginal,
oral, or anal sexual contact with
infected partner
Can be cured

Flu-like symptoms
Patchy hair loss
Advanced syphilis: heart problems,
paralysis, blindness

Occurs in women of reproductive
age who are sexually active
Problem bacteria that are
normally present only in small
amounts increase in number
Can be cured

Signs & Symptoms
White or gray vaginal discharge
Pain, itching, or burning in the vagina
A strong fish-like odor to genitalia(esp.
after sex)
Burning during urination
Treatments
Treated with antibiotics:
Metronidazole
Clindamycin
18. Trichomoniasis
Caused by the single-celled
protozoan parasite Trichomonas
vaginalis
Transmitted through vaginal,
oral, or anal sexual contact with
infected partner
Can be treated

Signs & Symptoms
Unusual discharge
Pain, itching, soreness, redness, or
burning in genitalia
A strong odor to genitalia
Burning during urination
Treatments
Treated with anti-parasite
medications:
Metronidazole
Trinidazole
20. Viral Hepatitis Serious liver disease
Hepatitis A, B, & C
Transmitted through vaginal,
oral, or anal sexual contact with
infected partner, sharing needles,
mothers to babies
Can be treated with medications

Abstinence
Vaccination
Reduction of number of sex partners
Use protection (condoms)
Mutual monogamy
