2. Documentary research- Jeremy
Clarkson
Brief overview- Clarkson is a British broadcaster and presenter, most famed for the
shows Top Gear, The Grand Tour and most recently, Clarkson’s Farm. People either
love or hate Clarkson, his humour is usually quite offensive and sometimes over the
line which some people aren’t a huge fan of. He has no filter and doesn’t care what
people think about him, he is especially loved by big petrol headed men as he has
similar characteristics to them. I’m researching into him as I want to explore the
comedic but also informative side of car documentaries which he is most known for.
One of his biographies starts by talking about Clarkson’s upbringing, mentioning that
“his was a privileged childhood, with a stable family” but as he has grown up, he
hasn’t followed suit of becoming a stereotypical ‘posh snob’. He is notably known for
Top Gear which has all the elements of a typical car show, whilst also being like none
you have ever seen before. There are certain serious elements of the show where
they talk about new cars and often give helpful advice, whereas other times, with his
co-hosts, they do things completely unexpected from a car show, they take old
Peugeot's up mountains and get celebrities to do track laps in old, bang average cars,
which leads to some hilarious content.
Clarkson is a very outspoken man, and his work definitely portrays that. You may
think his lack of filter makes him a lazy, irresponsible person, but Clarkson is a very
hard working man who puts a lot of effort into the work he creates, from his books
to his tv shows. Jeremy has always been a big inspiration for me as I grew up
watching him as a child, he was one of my main reasons for my passion for cars and
everything motor related.
3. Documentary
Research-
Kostis Nikolas
Brief overview- Kostis is a London based filmmaker from Greece that was
previously involved with the Renault formula one team and “is part of the
official video-production team of some of the world’s biggest festivals and
awards”. His work is always kept to a professional standard. Kostis went
through university which shows that hard work will get you places as he
graduated in 2014 and is now working for top companies such as Two by
Two Productions and Mighty Fine Productions. He is involved in almost all
parts of production, from writing to filming and also the editing afterwards.
Having such a wide range of skills allows him to work on most projects as
he knows how to help with each element of production. He doesn’t just
work on film production but is also heavily involved in the photography and
musical industry as well. As Kostis isn’t a huge celebrity, it is hard to find
lots of information on him as he hasn’t done any interviews, etc. so most of
my research has come from ‘about me’ sections on websites, one being his
own which I believe he also made himself, showing he also has a skill in
website designing.
4. Documentary
Research-
Yiannimize
Yianni Charalambous is a Greek car modifier based in the Uk. He does the highest quality car
wraps and modifications for high end vehicles, he has worked for multiple celebrities such as,
Simon Cowell and famous footballer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. “At Yiannimize we pride
ourselves on the fact that we only trust a combination of the very best materials and the most
competent professionals” just shows how serious he is about his work and that its always kept to
a high standard. Yianni also documents his work on individual vehicles by recording them in the
workshop and uploading them onto YouTube to share with everyone. He has a very likable
personality and he also makes sure his videos are just as high quality as the actual vehicle
modifications themselves. His documentaries are more of a casual approach to show off and
promote what he does rather than trying to inform an audience. Researching into how these
people work is actually really interesting because this is the type of person I want to interview
for my project.
5. Contextual Summary
In my contextual research, I looked at different documenters and people involved in the sector I
wish to make my documentary in. I learnt a lot about how they got inspiration and their reasons
behind why they chose that job and why they chose to make certain documentaries. For
example, Jeremy Clarkson is a huge inspiration to me as I grew up watching him and Top Gear. His
style is hilarious which isn’t the type of media I want to create but the production quality is
amazing and my piece will be more similar to the serious parts of the show. Yiannimize is the
perfect example of someone who I would like to have in the video to interview. The main reason
for researching Kostis was because I like his style of media. After watching a few of his short
documentaries and videos, I liked his style and is similar to the style of documentary I want to
create.
