1. The Colorado Film Industry
Background
I chose to do my Senior
Capstone Project on
filmmaking, specifically the
film industry here in
Colorado. I wanted to
research film because I
have been passionate
about filmmaking since I
was young.
Future Work
I will be going to CU
Boulder to receive a major
in Cinema Studies and
Moving Image Arts. Later,
I plan to work in film here
in Colorado or elsewhere.
My Mentor
My Mentor, Katharyn
Grant, is a family
friend and
independent
filmmaker, producer
and actor.
Goals
My goals were to learn about and experience what it is like
to work in the film industry, from the business and
bureaucratic side to the hands-on and creative side.
Methods and Experiences
I was fortunate to have many great experiences that
changed my view on filmmaking in Colorado. I talked at
various film festivals, worked on a shoot for a movie trailer,
and got to discuss and ask questions with people in the
industry: Director Chris Graves and writer/audio-mixer
Drek Zen. I also got to watch Chris Grave’s documentary:
“The Secrets of Blackmoor” and give him direct feedback.
Conclusions/What I learned
To be successful in Colorado’s film
industry, it is crucial to make connections
and work your way up the ladder.
Making connections is one of the primary
functions of film-school, just as much as
learning how to actually make a movie.
