2. Analogy of chemical reaction by T.S
Eliot
• Tradition and the Individual
Talent was first published in
1919 and soon after included
in the Sacred Wood Essays on
poetry and Criticism.
• Eliot’s idea of traditional is
complex as the historical sense
which is a perception of the
pastness of the past but also
of its presence.
3. Process of Depersonalization
• Its to the sense of tradition by comparing it to
a chemical process.
• The action which takes place, when a bit of
finely foliated platinum is introduced into a
chamber containing sulpher dioxide.
5. For Example;
Two Kinds of Elements
The elements of the experience of the poet are two
Kinds ;
(1) Emotions and
(2) Feeling
They are the elements which entering the presence of the
poets mind and acting as a catalyst go to the making of art.
7. The Poetic Process
• Eliot brings the analogy of chemical reaction to explain
the process of depersonalization. In this respect he has
drawn a scientific analogy.
• The two gases, previously mentioned are mixed in the
presence of a filament of Platinum. They form Sulpheric acid.
• The combination take place only he the platinum is present
,the newly formed acid contains no trace of Platinum and the
Platinum itself is Clearly unaffected has remained inert
,indifferent and unchanged.
8. • Eliot say that;
“The difference between art and the event is always absolute”
In the poetic process there is only group of a number of
experience and new things result from this group and this process
of concentration is neither careful nor deliberate it is a passive one.
In the Beginning his self his individuality, may assert itself but as his
powers mature there must be greater and greater extinction of
personality.
9. Poetry as Organization
• Having its origin emotions
recollected tranquility, and points
out that in the process poetic
composition three is neither
emotion, nor recollection for
tranquility.
10. Conclusion
T.S.Eliot does not decline personality or
emotion to the poet only , the must
depersonalize his emotions .
There should be exit concept of his
personality this impersonality can be
achieved only when the poet surrenders
himself completely to the work that is to be
done and the poet can know what is to be
done.
