Wordsworth's theory of poetic
Diction.
• William wordsworth was primarily a poet
and not a critic.
• However, his views on poetry are
extremely important and can be found in
the preface to be Lyrical Ballads.
• The aim of writing the preface was to
introduce to the readers poems of a new
kind,both in theme and style.
In the "preface" wordsworth also
emphasizes his commitment to
writing in the ordinary language of
people, not highly crafted poetical
one-True to traditional ballad
from,the poem depict realistic
characters in realistic situation so
contain a strong narrative element.
•He used language of common man
as such men communicate with the
best part of language is originally
derived.
What do you mean diction?
• It's general poetic diction means choice of
words which then lends a unique style for
each individual poet or author.
• How particular poet chooses his own
language? And then how he places and
plays around with that,in that since
wordsworth when he published in lyrical
Ballads for the first time in 1798.
He offered that anthology as an
experiment and he said that he is not
really satisfied by what goes on in the
name of poetry, obviously he was
attacking the neoclassical mode of
writing poetry.
We find education institutions all in
the city .
•The Neo classical people all they
were wits of the city and whereas so
wordsworth is taking a kind of an
arguments against them.
•He is interested in writing these
poems and lyrical Ballads in the
language as really used by men.
Three main principles of
wordsworth's poetic diction
•As we examine Wordsworth's
statement regarding poetic
diction,the following three points
come to our attention.
•The language of should be the
language"really used by men" but it
should be a 'selection' of such
language.
• All the words used by the people cannot
be employed in poetry.
• It should be filtered and refined.
• It should have a certain colouring of
imagination.
• The poet should give the colour of his
imagination to the language employed by
him in poetic composition.
• Wordsworth means is that the words in
conversation,if they are properly
selected,would provide the rough framework
of the language of poetry
• Though the power of imagination the poet can
select words for poetic composition, when the
poet is truly inspired ,his imagination will
enable him to select from the language really
used by men.
