 William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was
 primarily a poet and not critic.
 However his views on poetry are
 extremely important and can be
 found in the preface to the Lyrical Ballad1802.
 The aim of writing the preface was to introduce
 to the readers poem of a new king, both in
theme
 and style.
lThe dominant theme of the preface is diction
and thus subject of poetry.
lWordsworth asserts that the language of
poetry is “a selection of the real language of
men or the very Language of men, and that
there was no essential difference between the
language of prose and that of poetry.”
lPoetry is the breath
and finer spirit of all
knowledge.
l It is the impassioned
expression which is in
the countenance of all
Science.
l
lIn the preface wordsworth also emphasizes
his commitment to writing in the ordinary
language of people ,not a highly crafted
poetical one.
lTrue to traditional Ballad from the poems
depict realistic character in realistic situations.
lStrong narrative element
lLanguage of common man
lLanguage is originally derived
 Wordsworth’s Theory of poetic diction was a result of
desire to find suitable langauge for new territory of
human life which was conquering for period treatment.
 He brought out the Lyrical Ballads with a view to
ascertain how for the langauge of conversation in the
middle and lower class of society is adapted to the
purpose of poetic pleasure.
 Since he amid at dealing with humble and rustic life in
his poetry, he advocates the use of a selection of
Language really used by men in a state of vivid
sensation.
 Woolworth's believed the a poet is essentially a man
speaking to men so he must use the Language of real
men

language or the language of country side.
lHe used simple and attractive diction coming out
spontaneously.His langauge loked to be
natural.He used conceits,image,
symbols,metaphors similes,alliteration etc.
lAll added great beauty to the work and his style
became very lofty to all the common people as
Longings has depicted in his work on the
sublime. His using such langauge and style is
wonderful.
