work that eliot produced in his
critic capacity .
The essay was published in 1919 in
egoist- the time literary
supplement .
But the later, the essay was
published in the sacred wood:

1920/21. Which is eliot’s first book
of criticism .
The essay is described by david
lodge as the celebrated critical
essay in the english of the 20th
century .
Introduction of the essay tradition and
individual talent
8. Doesn’t blind
adherence to previous
generation
Past directs the present
Modified and altered by
the present
Tradition doesn’t mean
poet should know only
whom he admires
A particular age or
period he likes, that
sign of immaturity and
inexperience.
9. The artist must surrender himself to
tradition.
He must allow his poetic sensibility
to be shaped and modified by the
past.
His emotions and feeling must be
depersonalised; he must be as
impersonal and objective as a
scientist.
The mind of the poet is like the
catalytic agent .
Great work do not express the
personal emotion of the poet.
Impersonality of poetry
10. In the process of poetic
composition,there’s
neither emotion, nor
recollection, nor
tranquility.
In the poetic process
there’s only concentration
of a number of a number
of experiences, and a new
thing results from this
concentration.
Why Eliot denies wordsworth’s Theory of Poetry ?
13. Combination of oxygen and sulphur dioxide=sulphur trioxide
o2 + so2 = so3
sulphur trioxide+water=sulphuric acid
So3+h2o=h2so4
sulphur dioxide + water = sulphurous acid
so3+h2o=h2so4
Platinum is catalyst. Without it process does not take place
Chemical reaction
14. How works
chemical
reaction in
this theory ?
Poet’s mind
is
receptacle
Poet’s mind
to a catalyst.
Mental
process with
emotion and
feelings
Poet has no
personality
but medium
Emotions+
Feelings+
Experience
=Poetry
Poet’s
personality
is not there
in the poem
15. The
summing
up
Poetry is not a turning loose of
emotion, but an escape from
emotion, not expression of
personality but escape from
personality
Acquires a sense of
tradition the historical
sense which makes him
conscious not only present
moment but also past .
Eliot doesn’t deny
personality or emotion
to the poet. Only he
must depersonalize his
emotions
16. After all we see in this essay according to
him, the emotion of art is impersonal .
and the poet cannot reach this impersonality
without surrending himself whooly to the
work to be done .
and he is not likely to know what is to be
done unless he lives in what he is not merely
the present, but the present moment of past,
unless he is conscious, not of what is dead, but
of what is already living.
