3. Prior to Taking this Training
Staff members responding to BBP Spill Clean-Up must be
“OSHA BBP authorized”
OSHA is a government agency: Occupational Safety and Health
Administration
Staff are authorized by successfully completing the
University’s BBP Training and Hazard Communication
Training and this Standard Operating Procedure training.
University’s BBP Training requires annual renewal
If three trainings are not completed, or if BBP Training is not
current, staff are not authorized to clean up BBP
4. Reminder: What is BBP?

BBP can be present in blood or Other Potentially Infectious
Materials (OPIM), which include:
Blood, semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial
fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid,
saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that is visibly
contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations where it
is difficult or impossible to differentiate between body fluids

6. Campus Recreation SOP
Campus Recreation’s SOP for BBP Clean-Up shall also be applied to
vomit or fecal clean up if it is suspected blood may be present.
If a staff member does not feel comfortable performing the clean-up
tasks, they shall keep the area blocked off and inform the Recreation
Supervisor. Another staff member shall perform the clean-up, or the
Recreation Supervisor shall notify the facility’s Building Security
Coordinator for assistance.
7. Campus Recreation SOP
If assistance is needed because:
the spill is unusually large
it involves additional hazards
clean-up materials are not available
Available staff does not feel comfortable performing clean-up
Contact the Building Security Coordinator (BSC):
Haley Cox (Fike), Ben Blodgett (Douthit), Dwayne Skelnik (Snow)
or Jimmy Mullinax (backup for all)
The BSC will then contact University’s Office of Environmental
Health and Safety at (864) 656-3311

scoop/dustpan to pick up material and put into red Biohazard
Bag. Dispose of the scoop/dustpan in red Biohazard Bag
c. If spill is too large for provided clean up materials, have Recreation
Supervisor contact the facility’s BSC for follow up
