3. Goals for Training
For Campus Recreation student staff to:
Understand when to evacuate the building
Understand the roles of each staff area in an evacuation
Understand the emergency exit routes and holding area
Understand how to resume normal operations
4. When to Evacuate
Fire Emergencies
Chemical Exposures and Spills
Immediately notify affected personnel and evacuate the spill area
Pull the building fire evacuation alarm if full evacuation is needed
Utility Emergencies
Power outage, water leak, or other utility failure for evacuation
5. When a Fire Alarm Sounds
Know what area you are in
Know what areas your position should clear for
evacuation
Instruct patrons what emergency egress they should take and
where the holding area is located
As a team, clear all areas of the building – including
every bathroom and shower stall, check every hallway
and stairway
Communicate via radio as you clear areas
If entering opposite gender, keep eyes down and announce
yourself repeatedly
6. When a Fire Alarm Sounds
Roles
Communicate that we are unsure why the alarm is
sounding and they are required to exit until the alarm is
verified by Fire/EMS
Make sure that all of the areas (including locker rooms
and restrooms) are clear
Take the patrons to the holding area
Wait for the all clear before re-entering the building
7. When a Fire Alarm Sounds
Reminders
Most people will think it’s a “drill”
Take the stairs, not elevators
Leave personal items
Help those who need additional assistance with exiting
the building

Cycle Studio, Locker Rooms, Functional Training Space and
Group Fitness Studio
Staff Responsibility: Fitness Assistant (cycling studio),
Welcome Center Assistants
Exit Points
Primary Egress: Back Staircase (stair 1)
Secondary Egress: Middle Staircase (stair 2), Front Left or Right
Staircase (stair 3 or 4)
Once area is cleared, radio to the Rec Spec “Area 1, Clear”
Holding Location
Grass area in front of Hub or Grass area behind service road along
N Cherry Rd.

Welcome Center, Multipurpose Room, Cardio Section
Staff Responsibility: Welcome Center Assistants
Exit Points
Primary Egress: Middle Staircase (stair 2)
Secondary Egress: Front Left or Right Staircase (stair 3 or 4),
Back Staircase (stair 1)
Holding Location
Grass area in front of Hub or Grass area behind service road along
N Cherry Rd.

12. How to re-enter and Resume
Operations
Rec Spec will get all clear from Fire/EMS
Radio staff to return first
Announce to patrons they may re-enter after staff
Those who were already in the facility will reenter without swiping
back in
