3. My main product and my
ancillary tasks as a complete
package conform to many
conventions of mainstream
gangster film, particularly
contemporary films. However
my film “The MOB” subverts in
some ways which gives it its
significant unique selling point.
One of the ways in which it does
is the diverse multicultural cast.
In traditional gangster movies
which emerged in the early
decades of the 19th century there
was a predominantly white cast
and low levels of
multiculturalism. However, as
time progressed we saw the up
rise of different cultural
backgrounds in gangster movies
such as the American Gangster. It
added more depth to the profiles
of each character.
My main unique point is the cross
hybrid with a classic gangster
storyline of a fight for power and an
East London setting and atmosphere.
Here a hybrid of high and low culture
is combined. Dominated by ethnic
minorities my products do well to
project the message of adaptability to
the “gangster” scene.
The props such as the suits and high
profile vehicle do well to represent
the conventions expected by the
audience expecting to look at a
gangster genre. The East London
makes it contemporary and relatable
in terms of time period for the
audience. It also made it easier to
divide the class of the characters. For
examples in the top picture it is quite
clear to tell that he is a drug
distributor or someone with a low
status role due to his appearance in
the are. However the brothers stand
out from the rest in this area.
4. For a mainstream contemporary film an appropriate and successful
marketing campaign would consist of using methods such as advertised on
bus shelters, cinema screenings before films and as a poster in a train
poster. It will be easily accessed by the public on a daily basis and can be
spread round quickly by word of mouth.
The trailer for my A2 media production would appeal to all categories in
the socio-economic classification system because it is not targeted at any
specific individual. Whether you are at the bottom with lots of leisure time
to near the top with vast amounts of disposable income, there will be time
to watch the movie. It also stretches from people with the need of an
escapist lifestyle to those who are just looking for a thrill. My magazine
would mostly be aimed at the older demographic because the young are
not engaged with this “less recent” form of media. My poster more or less
will be available for the general public and won’t have any restrictions to
who can access it. It will most likely end up like other mainstream film and
onto social networking. From there the platforms can go from Facebook to
Twitter to Instagram and more. Nowadays, things go viral with just a click
of a button so I’m almost absolutely certain that my production would
thrive in the marketing department.
Also there would most likely be interviews with the cast members after
the premiere of the film to keep the interest of the public high. Being of the
same sort of social category, most would be able to engage well.
