1. Audience Feedback Post Production Questions
All participants were expected to have seen the
complete products (music video/magazine
advert/digipak) prior to answering the following
questions. This was controlled and measured in order
to make these answers as reliable as possible.
Respondent Name: Jacob Holmes
1.Having seen the video, what genre do you think it
falls into, and what features within the video
influenced your answer to this question?
I felt like the video’s genre was hard to directly
pinpoint. I thought the video could be indie, however
smoking and drinking are portrayed in alternative
music videos and even some country and rap videos.
2.Do you understand the meaning? Is it straight
forward or does it rely on audience interpretation?
I think the meaning of the video was to show the
personal journey of this religious figure who had
started drinking and smoking, who eventually finds his
way back to religion. The meaning I take from this is
the strength of religion and how there is a distinctive
conflict between the church and youth culture.
2. 3.Were there any components within the video or
ancillary products that you thought were
particularly effective?
The digipak was well-made and looked very
professional, as did the magazine advert. They both
used the same colour scheme and fonts to ensure they
worked together very well. In terms of the video, I felt
the use of props such as the ‘Hells’ beer bottle was a
nice touch, because it reinforced one of the main
themes of the video (religion/good vs evil). Another
example of well thought out imagery was the sign
reading ‘The Monks Walk’ which was ironic because it
mirrored the physical action that was on screen in that
moment, and perhaps hinted at the journey the
reverend makes from drinking/smoking to going back
to the church.
4.Could you offer any possible avenues for
expansion or development of the products in
order to make them more effective?
I felt the climactic sequence of the video was the
boxing scene because it showed the damaging effects
of being caught between religion and alcohol/smoking.
This being said, I thought the resolution to this climax
3. was too short in the video, and though it made sense, I
felt a little longer on screen would have made it more
powerful.
5.In your opinion, what audience was this video
targeting, in terms of both demographic and
psychographic features?
The audience was most likely male due to the boxing
scene as males are commonly associated with
aggression and fighting. Religious figures tend to be
male too; I this is why I think the audience was male. I
also think the audience was young adults because the
themes explored within the video where too adult for
younger children, though this being said
smoking/drinking is commonly associated with
adolescent behaviour meaning teenagers and young
adults is probably who this video was aimed at.
6.There was once central figure throughout all of my
products. What do you think of this casting
choice?
I thought the actor was a good choice for the role
because he was believable and seemed to take it
seriously. He also carried presence when in front of the
4. camera, which is important because if the main
character is week or uninteresting, the video can
become hard to watch.
