Listening Process
Types of listening
Listening is more than Just hearing
a) Active listening: demonstrates interest and
encourages continued speaking.
b) Appreciative listening: To show appreciation to
others
c) Attentive listening: to Show
attention/attentiveness
d) Biased Listening: Persons listens only what he
want to listen
e) Casual Listening: Listening without showing
attention
f) Comprehension Listening: Listening to
understand. Seeking meaning.
Types of listening
g) Critical Listening: Listening in order to
evaluate.
h) Deep Listening: Seeking to understand
the person, their personality and unspoken
meanings
i) Discriminative Listening: Listening for
something specific (Baby crying)
j) Empathetic Listening: To understand
what the other person is feeling.
Types of listening
k) Inactive Listening: Pretending to listen
actually thinking.
l) Judgmental Listening: To pass judgments
m) Partial Listening: Most of the time listening,
but some times dreaming, thinking etc
n) Reflective Listening: Listening then reflecting
back to the other person
o) Relationship Listening: Listen to support and
build relationship
Types of listening
p) Evaluative Listening: Listen to evaluate,
criticize and pass judgments
q) Sympathetic Listening:: listening with
concern for the well being of other person
r) Total Listening: paying close attention in
active listening, meaning found through how it
is said

• Show support
• Build rapport
• Resolve problems
• Answer Questions
• Finding underlying meanings
• Better Work Environment
• Better relationships
Methods to improve listening
• Face the speaker
• Maintain eye contact
• Respond appropriately
• Focus only on speaker
• Keep an open mind
• Engage yourself with questions for clarification
• Minimize internal distractions
Listening Mistakes
• Physiological barriers- Hearing problems
• Physical barriers- sound, cigarette smoke, heat
• Attitudinal barriers: other works and problems
• Wrong assumptions
• Cultural Barriers
• Interrupting the speaker
• Completing the speaker sentences in advance
• Dominating conversations

Types of listening Listening is more than Just hearing a) Active listening: demonstrates interest and encourages continued speaking. b) Appreciative listening: To show appreciation to others c) Attentive listening: to Show attention/attentiveness d) Biased Listening: Persons listens only what he want to listen e) Casual Listening: Listening without showing attention f) Comprehension Listening: Listening to understand. Seeking meaning.
