This is a document showing some plans and ideas for my costume and props that I will need to source and use within my music video for my A level in media studies.
2. MUSIC VIDEO COSTUME:
This costume is the main one seen throughout the music video as I wanted
it to become an iconic look that people associate these shirt designs with
this music video, much like Michael Jackson has his thriller jacket or glove.
I imagine the artist to be wearing the shirt while on tour and promoting the
album.
It is seen throughout most of the music video in a lot of the major scenes.
For example, when she is in the classroom, broken on the studio floor and
in front of the green screen.
I have brought the costume from a local vintage shop to connote the weird,
dysfunctional and timeless feel to the video. It also relates to the digipak
which is a polaroid picture.
The shirt consists of a red and blue checkered design and is not a typical
females costume but is different, which coincides with the meaning behind
the song. All the costumes are with white of black simplistic t shirt and
black leggings to throw off anything on top.
3. This certain costume is a white, fluffy, modern coat and seen throughout
various scenes within the music video.
I chose this costume for the outdoor scenes and inside the school, while
sitting on the abandoned brick wall, walking through the streets of
Birmingham and on her way to school.
I have sourced the costume from the high street store New Look. I
purposely thought the iconic coat had to be from a big, well known British
retailer to play on my target audience’s psychographics of style and
fashion.
I wanted the protagonist to wear a winter coat to
connote the time of year I wish my music video to be
set. I wanted to play on pathetic fallacy, where her
mood of feeling cold and alone is backed up by what
she is wearing as well as the dull winter weather.
During the later change in narrative she looses the
coat and we see her in the t shirt underneath.

4. MUSIC VIDEO COSTUME:
The outfit shown to the left shows a palm tree jumper which is worn over
the top of a black tank top with sparkly leggings. This is the only point in
the music video where I intend to change the bottom half of the costume
from black to sparkles and black.
The outfit will be visible throughout the scenes where she attends the
concert; when there is a change in narrative.
The outfit is brought from different high street British retailers in order to
again appeal to the target audience physiographic and the theory.
I wanted the artist to appear different throughout the music video but
especially in this part and this is where I wish to show the artist being her
true self and getting away with it as she meets like minded people who
feel the same way as her. However, I didn’t want to go too extreme with
costume because that would denote what the entire music video is about
as I intend to create a very clear narrative and create a not so
stereotypical pop video with glittery small outfits such as seen with Jessie
J, Lady Gaga, Nicki Manage etc. In addition, I want the audience to be
aware that my protagonist is different to the rest through her personality
rather than her costume.
5. MUSIC VIDEO PROPS:
I will be using red hair spray as a main prop within my music video.
The hair spray will be used in the scene where my protagonist is seen
spraying her hair to the lyrics, “sometimes I want some raccoon or red
highlights.” When her hair is sprayed red I will take my picture for my
digipak design as a direct link into the music video.
I will personally buy the prop from a card shop.
The meaning behind the protagonist dying her hair red is to link in with the
lyrics and what the music video is about – being as free as her hair and
who she wants to be. Therefore, if she wants to spray her hair red that is
exactly what she will do.
Throughout my music video my protagonist will be seen to be carrying a
modern school bag.
This will be visible mainly in the scenes where she is walking to school
and at school.
I am borrowing the school bag from the person who plays my protagonist.
The reason I want to include the school bag is to connote further the age
of my protagonist in order to link with the target audience further.
6. MUSIC VIDEO PROPS:The protagonist within the music video will, at the downfall of all her
emotions, be seen working off a mac book pro.
This will be visible within the scene when the protagonist has let all her
emotions build up over the first half of the music video and begins to mark
a very important change in narrative as she finds an advertisement for a
concert that would change her life.
I own a mac book pro so will be using this during the shoot.
The mac book pro will be used over any other laptop as its trendy, new and
fresh for my target audience. I believe the two step flow theory can be used
here as it creates a certain opinion of the technology used as the main
character finds something that changes her life on the laptop and is
appears very shiny and new on screen – as if like an advertisement.
The protagonist will be seen to be eating some cereal during a certain part
within the music video.
This will be during some of the opening scenes when she first comes down the
stairs in the morning.
The cereal will be sourced from the directors house.
The reason I specifically wanted to use cereal is because not only does it match
the lyrics but it is also meant to be the most important meal of the day. I am
therefore promoting the meal and allowing the audience to see the person may
have a lot of problems but is a normal teenager, who eats and does things that
everyone else does but sometimes likes to be different.
