Phoebe Reynolds is planning a music video to represent underrepresented groups like the LGBTQI+ community. She will use the song "We Fell In Love in October" by Girl in Red and feature a lesbian couple. Phoebe will shoot outdoors to contrast the worlds of the two main characters - a well-put-together girl and an alternative, struggling girl. She will follow conventions of music video genres like clear narrative, lip syncing, and showing the relationship between lyrics and images. Phoebe aims to engage her target audience of 16-25 year olds while addressing issues of representation.
2. How will I meet the needs of the
audience?
From my research I know that my target audience often feel that they aren’t
represented within society, and tend to feel very outspoken or ignored. I am
going to emotionally engage them by using a lesbian couple in my music
video, this allows more representation of groups, like the LGBTQI+
community, who often feel under represented in the media and in society. I
hope that this will make my target audience feel included and no longer
outspoken.
I also know from my research that teenagers and younger adults tend to be
more up to date with new and trendy music, for this reason I have decided to
use the artist ’Girl In Red’, Girl In Red is a fairly new artist who’s songs are
most popular with teenage girls and younger people in general. This is why I
thought she would be the perfect choice to use for my music video. She also
has a large range of love songs, making finding the right song much easier.
3. Graphics and Titles
Apple Chancery
BradleyHand
Lucida Calligraphy
These are some fonts that I am looking at for my music video. The text will appear
at the start. It will introduce the title of the song and also the name of the artist,
this will be during the introduction music. I wanted to use fonts that looked quite
royal and curly. As it will go with the soft tone of the music but also the images
that I will be using.
Herculanum
Krungthep
However I also want to use one of these fonts, I have chosen to use two different
fonts, this is to represent the two social groups being shown within my video. The
first, curly and royal font is used to represent the naturally beautiful girl who the
singer falls in love with. The second font I chosen represents the singer, the
character being shown is a drug addicted girl who is really struggling with life. The
font is more edgy and alternative, which is how I want to represent this girl.
4. Song Choice
For my song I am going to use the song ’We Fell In Love In October’ by the
artist Girl In red. I chose this song as it fits the genre of love songs, I also
know from my research that this song is very popular with the target audience
of 16-25 year old's who want to be emotionally engaged.
My song will meet Goodwin’s Theory, as I will have a clear narrative story, and
have one main protagonist as the artist. She will at times lip sync whilst
making direct focus at the camera. My video will include many closeup shots
of the artist during the chorus and sometimes the verses too.
Another way it will fit Goodwin’s Theory is through the relationship of the
lyrics of the song. For example some lyrics say “my girl, my girl, my girl” and
quite simply during this part of the chorus there will be images of the artists
girlfriend, showing the obvious relationship of the lyrics to the video.
5. Shooting ideas
My plan is to shoot everything outdoors, in fields and streets to show two
contrasting sides of the world, for representation.
In the chorus my plan is to use a repeat montage of short clips that are edited
on the beat. This will either be the same montage, or different clips lay out
in the same style to the beat.
I shall use many closeup shots of the artist lip-syncing the lyrics of the song,
but I will also film using many long shots when filming to scenery and the
couple.
For some shots I will move the camera around with the person being filmed,
to make it have the effect that they are filming each other. (home video
style).
I plan to edit to the beat, not for the entirety of the video, but for elements
of the chorus and verses I will. To create a smoother effect.
6. Mis-En-Scene
Costume Ideas- My artist will be wearing darker colours, a hoodie and ripped
clothes. I want her to appear like she’s had a rough time with dirt over her
clothes and messy hair. In contrast to this, the other character will be
wearing a pastel coloured summery style dress, may have flowers on it or
other spring themed images. I want her to appear well put together and
completely opposite of the other character.
The setting of my music video, will vary throughout. I will set some of it in
fields and meadows, I want it to appear like a perfect romantic setting, to
match the lyrics of the song. In contrast to this I will also show a darker,
street setting, I want it to appear quite edgy and run down, to reflect the two
social groups that I am representing in my video.
For props, I don’t plan on using many, as the main focus will be on the
characters themselves, and on the narrative. However if a prop is absolutely
important to show the narrative I will use it.
7. Locations for shooting, and the risks.
Field- This is a relatively safe space to film my piece, but I will take extra
precaution anyway. There could be members of the public around, as it will
be filmed in a public area. There could be animals to be aware of, such as
dogs and birds. Because of this I will try and find a time of day to film when
its not as busy.
Streets- There will be many precautions to take in this filming area as there is
a lot going on. We must be aware of pedestrians in the area and also moving
vehicles and cyclists. I plan to film these scenes in more quieter areas of the
streets, but should still be aware of these risks.
8. Conventions
I will show some classic genre conventions in my music video through the use
of a clear narrative, my narrative will be a love story between a girl on the
edge of society and another girl very much in the centre.
This will be shown through their clothing and how they present themselves.
I will also follow genre conventions of music videos through the use of lip
syncing at the camera, and occasional dance and movement.
The artist will be the main protagonist of the narrative, sticking to this love
story genre conventions.
