3. After seeing my music video and comparing it with other pop music videos, I have noticed that there are
similarities with the sound, editing, narrative, mise-en-scene and camera work. There were similar shots as well
as locations with my music video and other pop music video.
As I was planning to conform to the pop genre's audience which is aged 13-18 and to target such a large
audience I would have to conform to the conventions of a pop music video. In my music video, I use a lot of mid
shots and close ups like the in the music video 'Shape fYou'. In this music video they show the couple of Ed
Sheeran and the girl in a close up to show their facial expressions and emotions towards each other. In my
music video you see howTristan and Olivia together in a mid-shot to close up show their emotion as well.
The narrative of my music video is similar to that of Ed Sheeran's song 'Shape ofYou' because in my music
video the boy sees girl who he like and goes after her and he gets her, then they end up together. In 'Shape of
You' Ed sees a girl he like and he gets her but then she disappears, the she comes back at the end.
4. Also I think I challenged the convention a pop music video with the mise-en-
scene as the music video was filmed in a romantic setting where two people
can fall in love. My music video was filmed in a park and in a front room of a
house where you can see them enjoying each other's company, having fun
and getting closer. I have researched a lot of music videos in the same genre
but I couldn't find a pop music video with the same setting and mise-en-
scene, so the mise-en-scene is challenging the convention of a pop music
video as it is not the typical pop song setting and shows how they get closer
while using the mise-en-scene to sell the emotions they are trying to convey
to the audience.
The costumes of the music video isn't always the same in the all the scenes
so I decided to make them change outfits for the scene when they are inside
to get them to keep the music video alive and to keep it from being dull as it
won't entertain the audience. As you can see in Justin Bieber’s song
‘Boyfriend’ it shows him in more than one outfit as well as my music video,
they had a change of costume to give a sense of this happening over a
longer period of time. In other music videos the artists and the people being
filmed usually have more than one costume. The people in my music video
are wearing normal colours that aren't dark but are not bright but we
purposely made them wear something that is quite similar to show that they
are made for each other as they think the same.
6. I did research a lot of pop digipaks in order to get a feel of what pop digipaks look
like and to gain some inspiration to create my own, but I also looked at other genres
to also gain some experience and to also help me think if my digipak should
conform to the typical conventions of a pop digipak or if I should challenge them. I
looked at what the most common camera shots were used. The typical conventions
of a pop digipak is bright colours, the artist’s face showing, the artist’s picture taking
up majority of the space same font and colour scheme. I did conform in some areas
but I also challenged some conventions.
I was inspired by Rihanna’s album ‘LOUD’ and Jessie J’s album ‘WHO YOU ARE’ . I
kept my colour scheme the same because when I was researching, I learnt that the
best looking digipaks have 2 or 3 colours used to make it look structured and not
untidy. I also copied how the artist take up most of the page like their album covers
as well. I conformed with that convention to show the audience who the artist is, so
the audience are not guessing in the music. Another thing that I done which used
the typical conventions of a pop album was keeping the font the same. Doing this
enabled the digipak to look like it was one and look organized.
With my digipak it conveys the conventions of a pop digipak as it shows the emotion
through his body language of what he is trying to convey. I kind of got my inspiration
from Kendrick Lamar's album 'DAMN.' where the artist is standing by a wall but I
adapted mine in order to develop the conventions of a pop song digipak. However I
do challenge album cover conventions as most pop album covers show the artists
face with an expression which shows a certain emotion but on mine my artist isn't
facing the camera.
7. My digipak does challenge the conventions of a digipak for pop as
the colours aren’t bright and colourful as they usual pop digipak.
The reason why my the colour scheme challenges the conventions
is because I wanted my digipak to be different and to be realistic as
not everything about relationships are happy and joyful. There are
also sad and painful moments, as you can see from the front cover
of my digipak, the artist looks disheartened from his body language
because he’s not actually looking towards the camera. My digipak
did also convey some conventions like keeping the same colour
scheme throughout the whole digipak because it wouldn’t look
good if all the colours were different, so I kept the colours the same
in order to make it look professional.
Another thing that challeneged conventions of a pop digipak was
the artist not facing camera, I decided to do that in order so that the
audience could find and come up with their own meaning behind
the album as the picture can have multiple meanings depending on
the person looking at it. The reason for this was because the title is
‘STOLEN HEART’ which can have more than one meaning, so I
took a picture where the artist looks sad in order to portray the
emotions of him through his body language.
9. My product has all the conventions of a magazine advert which
includes: the album/artist name, release date, places to listen
to the album, same font and colour, reviews and image of the
artist. I also conformed to the magazine advert by using
different pictures than the ones I used for my digipak pictures. I
also had to keep my font and colour scheme consistent in order
to conform to the conventions and I showed what social media
platforms can be used to increase their fan base as well as
how much influence social media has on the younger
generation. As you can see from NME’s magazine, you can
see how Ed Sheeran takes up the whole of the page and I
challenge the conventions by having using different camera
shots. I done a mid shot to capture what the artist is wearing to
show off his style whilst in Ed Sheeran’s advert it is a close up
where his face takes up majority of the page.
