2. The most influental
researcher in developmental
phychology, he wanted to
know how children learns.
PIAGET TEORY
Jean Piaget (1896 - 1980)
Piaget based his theory
in the development of
chlidren cognitive
structures.
Based in observation in his own children, he
thought that children cognitive structures or
"Schemas" increase with development.
Jean Piaget and his family
COGNITION
The mental processes of an
human being and how it
learns, remembers,
understand and solve
problems.
3. SCHEMA
An schema is an internal
representation of the world, is
a category of knowledge that
let us interpret and
understand the world around
us
For Piaget, the schema
was the basic building unit
of intelligent behavior.
because it let
categorize the
knowledge and the
process to obtain it.
One example that
Piaget showed was the
schema of a baby
The baby schema is just a reflex, like suck or grasp
something, that's why a baby starts to suck if it
puts something in his mouth
4. EX.A baby starts to suck everything
because she has had an experience
with the mother's nipple.
Assimilation is relating an existing
schema to a new animal, object, or
situation.
ASSIMILATION
ACCOMODATION
The accommodation process changes
existing schemas as a result of new
information or new experiences.
A child knows that dogs have four legs, so he
believes that all animals with four legs are dogs, but
when he lives longer he realizes that more animals
have four legs like cats.
6. Piaget's theory identifies
four developmental stages
and the processes by which
children progress through
them.
Sensorimotor stage
Preoperational stage
Concrete operational stage
Formal operational stage
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
IN CHILDREN
Birth to 24 months, to 15 years
7. SENSORIMOTOR STAGE
0-2 years old
-They can turn
their heads in
all directions
-Puts objects in
mouth
-They like
music
-They speak few
words.
-Start walking
-Wave your hand
Brain of
a baby
8. PREOPERATIONAL STAGE
2-7 years old
-They begin to have
permanent teeth.
-Intelligence through
symbols.
-They develop the
imagination.
-They start dressing
themselves.
-They start
to ride a
bike.
9. CONCRETE OPERATION STAGE
-Brain of almost
mature size.
The children from 7-11
years old
-Know the differences
and similarities.
-They start to read
-Manipulation
10. FORMAL OPERATIONAL STAGE
11-15 years old
-They can see entered
puberty.
-They begin to develop
their hormones.
-Learn and adapt
to any situation.
-Physical and
emotional changes
-They don't think
formally.
-Interest in
developing social
bonds.
