3. SYNOPSIS
This music video will tell the story of a couple who has broken up. It shows them being
sad and not over each other as they constantly look back on old photos and messages,
yet they’re too scared to text each other, which is ironic as they both really want each
other, this would relate back to the lyrics and song title ‘we don’t talk anymore’. The
video will contain flashbacks during the verses, which will be bright and coloured as they
will show the happiness they had during the good parts of their relationship. However,
during the chorus the video will become dull coloured and the screen will split to show
both the girl and the boy apart from each other. The video will contain Barthes’ action
code as it only shows the couples happy moments in the flashbacks which leaves the
audience wondering why they broke up as that part of the narrative is restricted from
their knowledge.
4. SONGWe don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
What was all of it for
Ohh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
I just heard you found the one you been
looking
You been looking for
I wish I would have known that wasn't me
'Cause even after all this time I still wonder
Why I can't move on
Just the way you did so easily
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight
If he's holdin onto you so tight
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should have known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Ohh, it's such a shame
That we don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
What was all of it for?
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
Like we used to do
I just hope you're lying next to somebody
Knows how to love you like me
Must be a good reason that you're gone
Every now and then I think you might
want me to come show up at your door
But I'm just too afraid that I'll be wrong
Don't wanna know
If you're looking into her eyes
If she's holdin onto you so tight
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Oh, it's such a shame
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
(We don't we don't)
What was all of it for?
(We don't we don't)
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
Like we used to do
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight
If he's giving it to you just right
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Oh, it's such a shame
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
(We don't we don't)
What was all of it for?
(We don't we don't)
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
(We don't talk anymore)
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight (Oh)
If he's holding onto you so tight (Oh)
The way I did before
(We don't talk anymore)
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game (Oh)
Now I can't get you out of my brain (Woah)
Oh, it's such a shame
That we don't talk anymore
5. THEORY
Godwin: For certain aspects of the video I will be making the visuals link to the
lyrics, such as when the lyrics “Don't wanna know, Kinda dress you're wearing
tonight” are sung, the visuals will show the girl choosing a dress to wear.
Then when the lyrics “We don’t talk anymore” are sung the visuals will show the
and boy separated looking back on their old messages or photos. I’m doing this
order to follow the pop music video genre conventions as well as to make it more
obvious to the viewers. However other aspects of the lyrics may be ironic as the
song is about a break up yet flashbacks of their relationships will be shown.
Todorov: My music video acts as a narrative therefore it has a clear beginning and
end however, due to it being fragmented the middle part, which should contain a
disruption, isn’t present as it isn’t shown how the couple broke up, which also
means the end isn’t a resolution, meaning the equilibrium hasn’t been restored.
6. TYPE OF GENRE
The genre of my music video will be a pop narrative, as it will tell a story of a couples
break up. It will be a fragmented narrative as it will contain flashbacks which break up
the storyline. Some of the visuals will reflect the lyrics, whereas others will be ironic, as
the song is about a break up and the visuals will show them together. My video is more
story line based and won’t contain any lip syncing. In the flash back scenes I will be
editing the shots to be bright and more colourful in order to reflect the stereotypical
convention of pop music videos being fun and loving. I’ll also be doing many close ups
of the actors as pop music videos often focus on the actors facial expressions to reflect
feelings.
7. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is a fun-loving, 16 to 25 year old mass market.
Gender: In my music video both female and male actors will be used. It will show
show both genders struggling after their break up, making it more inclusive,
meaning it’ll appeal to both men and women. It will also counter-stereotype the
fact that men are never sad about break ups, as this will clearly show him hurting.
Ethnicity: My video will contain a white male actor and a Latino female actor. I
am using a white male as the original song is sung by a white male and I’m using
a Latino female in order to incorporate different ethnicities into my video, to try
make it more inclusive, however it won’t contain a wide range making other
ethnicities, such as Asian and Black feel left out and maybe less important as
they’re not represented.
Age: This video is aimed at my target audience ranging from 16 to 25 years old.
The models in my video will be in their late teens (18/19 years old) meaning
they’re within the target audience, making them easily relatable to the viewers.
My models will be wearing modern clothes, such as jeans and trainers, which will
appeal to my target audience as its their stereotypical clothing, the female will
also be wearing subtle makeup in most of the scenes, which will be relatable to
most girls within my target audience. I’ll also be using phones and social media
which are stereotypically associated with my target audience.
8. TARGET AUDIENCE
Region: The song is written and sung by an American male, but my
video won’t reflect that as it will be shot in the region of Essex. However,
don’t want to make it restricted just to a UK audience, therefore my
will be aimed globally. I will use locations such as a park and a bedroom
in order to make it relatable to most people, rather than just limiting it
the UK.
Socio-economic: This video would attract people from different socio-economic
groups. It would be most relatable to socio-economic groups ranging from E to
C1. The youngest of the target audience who are students (E) could relate to this
video due to the aspect of relationship and heart break as it is most common in
teen years, as well as the causal clothing and subtle makeup. They could also
relate to the locations such as the bedroom as in the video the bedroom will be a
teens room. This then also applies to D, C2 and C1 as they would be able to look
back on their first heart break, relating to the video, creating empathy with the
actors. Their socio-economic group would also be reflected through any branded
items.
9. TARGET AUDIENCE
Blumler and Katz: I think my video will contain diversion as it may be a distraction for the audience
from their own relationship issues as they follow the story of the two main characters, instead of
thinking about what's happening in their own life. This may then lead to personal identity as the
may realise they miss someone and may use the video as an eye opener. All of this could then lead
personal identity as the viewer may feel as though they know the actors or they may empathise with
them as they've been through a break up themselves, therefore they know how it feels, which allows
them to connect with the video and creates a bond between them and the actors. It also allows
realise that they aren't the only ones who struggled with heartbreak, making the video more
emotionally connecting. This makes the video more personal.
Young and Rubicam: I think my video will appeal to the mainstream as it goes through every day
situations that happen in peoples lives. For example, everyone gets into relationships and goes
through heartbreak at some stage in their life. This makes it extremely relatable to the entire
audience. There aspirer is also present in my video as the couple aspired to be this perfect
relationship, showing it off through social media posts, in order to be perceived as perfect by
others
10. REPRESENTATION
Female Representation: The female in this video will follow the stereotype that women are
extremely emotional after a break up, as the actor will be seen looking very upset while looking
back on her relationship. The video will also oppose Van Zoonen’s theory that women are always
sexualised in any type of media as in this video the female will be wearing mainly casual clothing
such as jeans. However, there will be one scene which will show the girl asking the boyfriend
dress she should wear while getting ready for a party which would follow bell hooks theory that
women are reliant on men as they are socially made out to be subordinate, therefore their
would matter.
Male Representation: The male in this video will counter-stereotype the stereotype that men
have no feelings and don’t get upset after a break up as it will show the actor having a tough
dealing with his heartbreak. During the flashbacks when the couple are happy the male will also
counter-stereotype the stereotype that all men are tough as he will be shown giving his girlfriend
flowers, which boys usually perceive as soppy and unmasculine.
Youth Representation: The music video will follow Hebdige’s theory that youth are either fun or
trouble. The fun aspect will be shown during the flashbacks when the couple is happy and
laughing and having fun together. The trouble aspect isn’t shown through them being rebellious
but during their break up as it causes them both pain.
