This music video shows a relat ionship between the song lyrics and the
visuals, the video is focused on two young adult s who addicted to the
party life style e.g. drugs, smoking, alcohol, shop lift ing and staying up
all night furthermore they are also addicted to each other. The video
shows the two that they are inseparable and demonst rates a t roubled
relat ionship (love/ hate). This video has been said to be based around
the t roubled relat ionship between Rihanna and her abusive ex Chris
Brown. Therefore the music video is important and it is showing the
audience of young women around 16 onwards that although you may
be in love you don’t have t o st ay wit h t he person and you can leave
them. This is shown at the end of the video when Rihanna finally packs
up her belongings and leaves her hopeless drunken boyfriend behind.
The music video builds up a story; at the beginning it has non-dieget ic
dramat ic music of a piano that has no link to the sound of the song.
However there is a young female who speaks over the music. This
relates to the audience of young women as it showing them that they
are not alone; and there are others who have been in similar situations.
I know that somet imes young adult s feel as though no one understands
and when are in relat ionships that they maybe shouldn’t be in; they
feel like no one understands. This is clearly demonst rated through the
narrat or’s tone of voice and her speech. She speaks with a soft subt le
tone making the situat ion feel calm and simple, showing that although
things may not appear simple can actually be simple.
“I t ’s like you’re screaming, and no one can hear
You almost feel ashamed
That someone could be that important
That without them you feel like nothing
No one will ever understand how much it hurt s
2. You feel hopeless; like nothing can save you
And when it s over, and it s gone
You almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back
So t hat you could have t he good.”
After the narrator has spoken there is dieget ic sound of thunder to go
with the lightening visual, this is representat ive of the relat ionship, it is a
metaphor to say that the relat ionship is a storm (t roubled). I t can also
be interpreted as the narrator having a flash back and showing
revealing her story to others.
Although the music video creates a story that links to the lyrics of the
song, the edit ing of it relates to the beat of the music this is due to the
fact that the famous Dj Calvin Harris also creates the song. Calvin Harris
features in part of the music video as a Dj in the middle of a field at
what appears to be a rave that the two love interest s are at tending.
Since this is a pop song with an up beat tune, the video has a fast up
beat pace and cut s in line with the music, this conforms to Andrew
Goodwin’s t heory of t hought beat s. This has also been clearly used to
show that when you are in live it feels like the whole world is spinning
around you and no one else exist s, this can also been shown through
t he lyrics “as your shadow crosses mine, what it t akes t o come live”
showing that the two characters are so madly in love that they never
leave each others side and feel like they depend on each other to feel
happy.
This music video does not show any intertextual reference of TV
programmes, films or other music videos however; it does have a
reference to reality, which makes this music video powerful, as it is
relatable for people who are within a similar situat ion.
This music video features Rihanna running through a field without her
top on. This scene caused uproar about her behavior also the farmer
who owned the land in which she was filming did not agree with the
raunchy behavior. This could have made the music video less
successful, however it did the complete opposite as it has reached
over 300, 000, 000 views on YouTube as many wanted to see what all
the uproar was about . I believe that the director choose to use this
footage as it demonst rates that when in love, people will do what ever
is necessary to keep their partners happy and will do stupid things to
keep them interested.
The video shows the young male playing with fire works, fire works has
connotat ions of danger, which again relates to the unhealthy
relat ionship. Part of t he lyrics quot es “But I got t o let it go” which shows
that she understands that her relat ionship is dangerous but she doesn’t
want to let go.
3. There is scenes of pills falling to the floor and the pupil of an eye
changing, this is shown as the beat of the music increases, and there is
a quick cut s t o show Rihanna’s st at e of mind being messy and
confused. I t then cut s to a scene of her and her boyfriend making out
which shows that she is toying between the good things and the bad
things that they share. I t also shows a group of people in a city center
walking around however the shot has been speeded up to show the
rush, which shows her state of mind being crowded and rushed due to
the of the drugs and her unhealthy relat ionship confusing her. The
drugs can also be seen as a metaphor of the addict ion she has to the
man.
This part of the music video is very interest ing as it shows the change in
the pupils, changing colours (on the cigaret te), the fast dropping pills
and the fire works exploding, (this is shown as a projector on the walls
of a room) this is an example of what it is like to take drugs: fast paced,
hallucinat ions, and the external features of the change in eyes.
There is frequent scenes of Rihanna in a room on her own with the
projector reflect ing on her, this changes from many different scenes of
peaceful things like a car driving down a long road, flowers, fields of
corn blowing in the wind and clouds, this is then juxtaposed by more
aggressive scenes such as a house burning, lightening, fireworks and a
building collapsing this shows that she is alone and is feeling dist raught
about the break up. However it is also representat ive of the dest ruct ive
relat ionship.
