This music video shows a relationship between the song lyrics and the visuals,
the video is focused on two young adults who addicted to the party life style
e.g. drugs, smoking, alcohol and partying but are also addicted to each other.
The video shows the two that they are inseparable and demonstrates a
troubled relationship (love/ hate). This video has been said to be based
around the troubled relationship between Rihanna and her abusive ex Chris
Brown. Therefore the music video is important and it is showing the audience
of young women around 16 onwards that although you may be in love you
don’t have to stay with the person and you can leave them. This is shown at
the end of the video when Rihanna finally packs up her belongings and leaves
her hopeless drunken boyfriend behind.
The music video builds up a story; at the beginning it has non-diegetic
dramatic music of a piano that has no link to the sound of the song. However
there is a young female who speaks over the music. This relates to the
audience of young women as it showing them that they are not alone when
and there are others who have been in similar situations. I know that
sometimes young adults feel as though no one understands and when are in
relationships that they maybe shouldn’t be in they feel like no one
understands, this is clearly demonstrated through the narrators tone of voice
and her speech. She speaks with a soft subtle tone making the situation feel
calm and simple showing that although things may not appear simple can
actually be simple
“It’s like you’re screaming, and no one can hear
You almost feel ashamed
That someone could be that important
That without them you feel like nothing
No one will ever understand how much it hurts
2. You feel hopeless; like nothing can save you
And when its over, and its gone
You almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back
So that you could have the good.”
After the narrator has spoken there is diegetic sound of thunder to go with
the lightening visual, this is representative of the relationship, it is a metaphor
to say that the relationship is a storm (troubled). It can also be interpreted as
the narrator having a flash back and showing revealing her story to others.
Although the music video creates a story that links to the lyrics of the song,
the editing of it relates to the beat of the music this is due to the fact that the
famous Dj Calvin Harris also creates the song. Calvin Harris features in part of
the music video as a Dj in the middle of a field at what appears to be a rave
that the two love interests are attending. Since this is a pop song with an up
beat tune, the video has a fast up beat pace and cuts in line with the music.
This has also been clearly used to show that when you are in live it feels like
the whole world is spinning around you and no one else exists, this can also
been shown through the lyrics “as your shadow crosses mine, what it takes to
come live” show that the two characters are so madly in love that they never
leave each others side and feel like they depend on each other to feel happy.
This music video does not show any intertextual reference of TV programmes,
films or other music videos however; it does have a reference to reality, which
makes this music video powerful as it is relatable for people who are within a
similar situation.
This music video features Rihanna running through a field without her top on.
This scene caused uproar about her behavior also the farmer who owned the
land in which she was filming did not agree with the raunchy behavior. This
could have made the music video less successful, however it did the complete
opposite as it has reached over 300, 000, 000 views on YouTube as many
wanted to see what all the uproar was about. I believe that the director
choose to use this footage as it shows that when in love people will do what
ever is necessary to keep their partners happy and will do stupid things as
they madly in love.
The video shows the young male playing with fire works, fire works has
connotations of danger, which again relates to the unhealthy relationship. Part
of the lyrics quotes “But I got to let it go” which shows that she understands
that her relationship is dangerous but she doesn’t want to let go.
3. There is scenes of pills falling to the floor and the pupil of an eye changing,
this is shown as the beat of the music increases, and there is a quick cuts to
show Rihanna’s state of mind being messy and confused, as it then jumps to a
scene of her and her boyfriend making out which shows that she is toying
between the good things and the bad things that they share. It also shows a
group of people in a city center walking around however the shot has been
speeded up to show the rush, which shows her state of mind being crowded
and rushed because of the drugs. The drugs can also be seen as a metaphor
of the addiction she has to the man.
This part of the music video is very interesting as it shows the change in the
pupils, changing colours (on the cigarette), the fast dropping pills and the fire
works exploding, (this is shown as a projector on the walls of a room) this is an
example of what it is like to take drugs, fast paced, hallucinations, and the
external features of the change in eyes.
There is frequent scenes of Rihanna in a room on her own with the projector
reflecting on her, this changes from many different scenes of her peaceful
things like a car driving down a long road, flowers, fields of corn blowing in
the wind and clouds, in the is juxtaposed by more aggressive scenes such as a
house burning, lightening, fireworks and a building collapsing this shows that
she is alone and is feeling distraught about the break up. However it is also
representative of the destructive relationship.
