Question 2
1. By Hannah Lortie
QUESTION TWO: HOW DOES YOUR
TITLE AND OPENING SEQUENCE
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
2. In my title and opening sequence, the social group I have used is young adults
that are female and male aged 18-25. This is my main social group because it is
the only social group shown. I have represented young adults through the use
of mise en scene, by making the costume related to audience. The costume
will be different pieces of clothing that are worn by young adults today; this
will be things such as ripped jeans (1) and casual yet smart tops (2), for a girl.
Whereas, a boy would wear jeans (3), jumpers (4) or a T-shirt (5). I have also
showed mise en scene through the props by including things that would be
used in someone’s daily life; these props would be things like mobile phones
(6), however a mobile phone is not used in my sequence so the only relatable
prop is the folder (7). This is relatable because my target audience will all use
folders for university lectures or filing documents at work. It is also relatable
because we see the girl is a doorstep seller with a folder, so this prop is used
by others and makes it more relatable to females aged 18-24 with jobs.
3. Originally I wanted the lighting in my film to be dark and mysterious but after
filming my first draft I have realised that the lighting is too dark and it’s hard to
see the characters face. So I am going to use brighter lighting to make the
characters faces more see able, the bright light also gives it positive nature in the
first flashback. In my film there is no swearing because it wasn’t really necessary to
the scene. I have used high and low angles but the high angles were more
powerful and the low angles were weaker, for example, in my product I have used
a high angle when showing the girl is on the floor waking up and moving around.
I used a high angle for this because it shows the girl is helpless and seen as
unimportant and unable to escape because she is weak. In my film I asked my
actors to focus on body language to help portray the feelings that are being
expressed by the characters. I tried to make the actors have as much eye contact as
possible so it looked like they were having a real conversation rather than a staged
one. The behaviour in the sequence is being used to reflect the feelings in the
scene, these are feelings such as: anger, tension, scared and petrified.
4. The sales girl in my film is a young adult she is doing this as a part time job,
which relates to the social group because the majority of young adults have
part time jobs. Also, the girl isn’t the best at her job as she is inexperienced,
we see this because she doesn’t show a lot of professionalism in the way she is
stood and dressed. She doesn’t seem to have shame in the way she speaks and
dresses. The girl is also very stereotypically pushy and arrogant, which links to
the social group because teenagers and young adults are usually pushy and
arrogant, this proves that in my film I have conformed to the stereotype, there
are also no similar styles of films that I know of now.
5. In my product I have created a true representation of the attitudes and styles
of the social group shown in the film, through the acting and mise en scene.
By keeping true to the social groups I have made the film more relatable to
the target audience. However, for the male character the representation isn’t
entirely true as someone wouldn’t just kidnap someone off their doorstep, but
the agitated attitude the man has towards the doorstep seller is a true
representation of how people react to doorstep sellers. Conversely, I have
created a true representation of the female character because as a doorstep
seller she is forceful and persistent in trying to make the male buy or at least
consider the products. Also, when the female is waking up she doesn’t act
abruptly or calm, she panics and tries to escape as anyone would.
