Evaluation 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
2. As Social Realist Films mainly represent
white, working class families. Isolated will
let the audience see the effect of living in a
working class area and with a working
class step-mother as our main Protagonist,
Mary Jane comes from an Asian middle
class family. However, this will shine a light
on middle class teenagers who also
condone Mary Jane’s behaviour.
3. Within our media product, we wanted to
represent who Mary Jane is, through her
attitudes and actions. By capturing, a snippet of
her life within the first two minutes, it prepares
the audience for the the momentum of the film.
The first 10 seconds will represent teenagers or
adults who enjoy the same leisure pursuits as
her.
4. One way of representing social groups was
through camera shots. For example, for the
rolling scene, it was in a point of view shot
as this will instantly connect social groups
to Mary Jane as the audience is able to see
through her eyes. For example, this type of
shot was used in ‘Trainspotting’.
5. In Trainspotting, the main characters use
drugs to have fun and be involved in
hooliganisms. However, we wanted to
show a different side to why people use
drugs; it is to find inner peace.
6. Another way to create representation
was through the language and dialect
used. The mum spoke in a working class
manner to portray her working class life
and attitudes. By not having any dialogue
for Mary Jane, it creates a sense of
mystery for the audience as language
and dialect is a big factor to determine
what class you are in.
7. In Isolated, we wanted to represent a
stereotypical working class mother, but created
an even bigger burden for her. This is to
challenge the audience’s thoughts about single-
working class step-mothers. There are different
ways to how each mother will react; we went for
the route of not caring about her step-daughter.
This will represent people who are in step-
families as they will be able to see a different
side to theirs.
