Representing Teens and Mothers (39
1. Question 2:
How does your title and opening
sequence represent particular social
groups?
2. My title and opening sequence I have represented the
following social groups;
• Teenage girl (16-18)
• Mother
I have represented teenage girls with the costumes; this is
because my main character is a teenage girl which is
relatable for girls (mainly teenagers) to watch and they
can relate through the use of costume because my main
character wears a onesie with colourful love hearts on in
the opening scene when she’s sleeping which shows that
she’s girly and still quite young.
3. The location that is set in the opening scene is her
bedrooms which are relatable for teenage girls as well
because of the purple bedding and wallpaper that is seen
in the scene is relatable for teenage girls because it’s girly.
The opening scene for my title and opening sequence
also represents a female adult social group because it
also includes relatable characters for them like the
mother which is relatable through costume because the
mother is wearing work clothes which might be relatable
for adults as adults have a job and go to work where as a
teenage female probably wouldn't have time for work
because she would still be in education.
4. Also the female adults make up isn't too outgoing
it's just natural which is what a typical mother
would look like where as you would see a younger
social group such as a teenage girl wearing much
more outgoing make up because she is a younger
character. The props that are seen in the opening
scene that helps to represent the social group of
teenagers is the iPhone that the teenage girl has
charging next to the bed which represents
teenagers because a typical teenager would have
their phone charging next to them whilst they are
sleeping.
5. Other props that are used in my opening scene to represent a
teenage social group is the sixth form ID badges that are
hanging on the door that helps to show the viewer that she’s a
teenager because she’s still a student in education. I also
filmed a messy bedroom that had props like make-up and
clothes on the floor to help set the scene and represent what
a teenage girl’s bedroom would look like so that it can
represent that specific social group. The lighting in the
bedroom whilst the teenager is sleeping is also very dimmed
lighting which represents the teenagers mood because she
would be tired and moody because of school and work which
represents this social group because a stereotypical teenager
would be a moody teenager.
6. Another social group that is seen in my film opening is adults
which is seen when the mother gives direct eye contact to her
children when delivering the bad news, this represents an
adult social group because it shows that the mother is trying
to stay confident even know she’s delivering bad news and it
also shows that she’s trying to keep in charge of the situation
which relates to an adult social group. The mothers body
language also represents an adult social group because she is
lent over on the couch looking down at the teenager girl
whilst she is talking to her this represents an adult social
group because it shows that the mother is more dominant
than the child and she is looking down at her which shows she
has more control which most adults have over their children.
7. The costume that the mother wears represents
a female adult social group because she wears
clothes that aren’t very revealing and cover her
up because she’s representing an older
character. In contrast to this my teenage girl
wears more revealing clothes that shows of
more of her assets because she’s representing a
female teenager.
