The document discusses how the title and opening sequence of a media product represents the social group of male teenagers aged 15+. Specifically:
1) The main character who is being bullied is shown as fat and ginger, wearing unfashionable clothing, representing a stereotypical bullying victim, while the bullies wear popular brands to seem fashionable.
2) Costumes, lighting, body language, and camera angles are used to distinguish the bullying victim from the bullies and represent the lack of confidence in the victim and power over him by the bullies.
3) Props like a moped, mobile phone, and camera angles emulate the lifestyle and perspectives of the target audience and allow them to relate to
2. • My title and opening sequence represents the
social group of male teenagers aged 15+. In
my opening sequence the viewer can see a
young ginger boy being bullied. This is a
typical stereotype that thousands are bullied
upon through there school years due to their
appearance.
3. • Mise en scene is used in my opening sequence to
represent bullying. The costumes that are worn by the
main characters in the title and opening sequence
represent this particular social group. The main
character who is being bullied in the opening sequence
is shown as fat and ginger. This is the reason why he is
being bullied, and to go with this he is wearing
unfashionable clothing that gives the main character a
smart appearance. In contrast the bullies are wearing
clothing that is seen to be in fashion, all clothes that
they are wearing are brands, and the bullies can be
seen to be wearing Superdry, Adidas, Fred Perry, and
Lacoste. All of these brands are worn regularly by my
target audience of 15+ males. As a result of this my
audience can easily relate to the characters in the title
and opening sequence.
4. • The viewer can see a distinct difference in the costumes
and can see the obvious correlation between the
costumes and the bullying. I feel that the majority of
my viewers will be able to relate to this stereotype this
is because my target age are all either at school or just
left, this means that they are aware of what goes on in
schools and maybe they know someone who has been
effected by bullying or maybe affected themselves.
Lighting is also used to represent the social group
throughout my opening sequence. When the young boy
is alone the scenes are dark and cold which emulates
his feelings and his life at that moment. When the
young boy is stood in front of the school the scene is
extremely bright, this emulates how the boy’s life is
about to improve as he erases those who deserve it. He
is finally getting rid of the bad things in his life.
5. • My title and opening sequence represents my
social group through the use of props, in the
product the main character rides a moped my
target audience are not old enough for a car so
they have mopeds to get around for freedom this
is a true representation of my social group. Body
language is the second way that my social group
is accurately targeted throughout my title and
opening sequence. This is represented when the
young boy is shown on screen; the viewer can
clearly see that he is slumped and crunched up,
this shows a lack of confidence which has resulted
from the constant bullies.
6. • The next prop that represents my social group is the mobile
phone, in the title and opening sequence the young boy
throws his phone at the wall, this is a representation of how
teenagers do not think before they act, they just do things
before thinking about the consequences that could result
from their actions. I have included angles that my target
audience will be able to relate too. For example I used a low
angle of the moped riding past; this is often used in
programmes such as Topgear and fifth gear that is widely
viewed by my target audience. When the young boy is
being bullied in the title and opening sequence the camera
angle looks up at the bullies showing that they are in
control of the situation and that they have power over the
young boy. When the young boy takes over I have used a
high angle to demonstrate that the power has changed and
now the young boy will take ‘vengeance’ on the bullies.
