1. Q2: HOW DOES YOUR TITLE AND
OPENING SEQUENCE REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
By Holly Morsley
2. In my title and opening sequence, the main
social group I have represented is male young
adults due to the main protagonist being a male
young adult (around the ages of 20-25 years
old). I have done this through the use of mise
en scene in costumes, lighting and props as well
as other things.
3. Costume wise, the character wears quite casual clothing as part of his
urban disguise. This involves wearing a jacket, t-shirt and jeans.
Although in terms of narrative, this is seen as an urban disguise, the
costume may not count. However it does reflect the rough around the
edges part of the character and shows his casual approach to his
missions, reflecting his age. The character wears no make-up with the
exception of the fake blood on his shirt. This represents the profession
rather than his youth, therefore this can be discounted.
4. The use of props in this piece represents the social group as elements
of technology are involved. The mobile phone and the laptop show the
protagonist reliance on technology, which is a common trait among
young people these days. Also the scattered papers on his desk show a
lack of organisation and untidiness, a common stereotype for the
younger generations. This is also represented in the hap-hazard
manner in which he handles the files, perhaps showing a slobby
character trait.
5. The dark lighting within the setting shows the mystery of the
character, for example when he first enters the home. The fact
his home is not fully lit shows that he lives alone and is very
secretive, reflecting his profession. However this may not reflect
his age.
6. The scripted elements such as camera angles and dialogue
also represent the character. For example the use of body
language when the character comes in. He is very worn out
but doesn’t express any other emotion – possibly linking to
the male side of this social group due to the heightened
masculinity and the emotionally void side of young adulthood.
7. The single line of dialogue could represent the age as he says “I have been
contract killing for 3 years.” This possibly shows the protagonist as less
experienced, reflecting upon his young age. Certain camera angles could
represent young adults as being reminiscent of their younger days, for
example the close up of the group picture with the protagonist of the girl.
This could show the young people as becoming more independent as wide
shots of him by himself emphasise his isolation.
8. Overall I would say that, while the character’s
personality has been altered slightly to match
his profession, a lot of the characteristics of his
age group would be considered a fairly accurate
representation of the social group.
